The Food Service Worker is responsible for providing comprehensive support in customer service and food preparation in varying types of food service operations. This role ensures high standards of sanitation, safety, and customer satisfaction while adhering to University Housing and Dining (UHD) policies and procedures.

Serve high-quality food products which may include performing short-order, made-to-order cooking, and customized drinks using commercial production and kitchen equipment. Read, follow, and execute recipes based on culinary standards. Set up, stock, clean, and replenish the serving area before/during service. Maintain concise menu and product knowledge and ensure customer satisfaction with drink/food quality. Break down and clean all serving areas, workstations, and equipment after service. Restock shelves, beverage stations, and convenience store merchandise as needed. Ensure detailed cleaning tasks are completed throughout the shift.

Provide excellent customer service to external and internal customers by greeting and assisting customers, ensuring a professional and enthusiastic demeanor. Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system, process meal plan, cash, credit card, and transactions accurately.

Maintain and replenish service supplies, including condiments and napkins. Assist in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in all areas, including dining rooms, kitchens, dish areas, and bathrooms. Tasks include but not limited to sweeping, mopping, cleaning surfaces, walls, and windows. Report emergencies and equipment issues.

Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation guidelines. Store food in designated areas following wrapping, dating, and rotation procedures. Maintain temperature logs throughout shift and ensures food is cooked and maintains appropriate temperature throughout service. Avoid cross-contamination and actively monitor food levels and quality. Follow work safety guidelines and utilize proper PPE as needed.

Seek direction at the beginning of the shift and communicate professionally/effectively with team members and supervisors throughout shift. Maintain current knowledge of all areas of responsibility. Provide support throughout the dining units as needed. Assist with training and guidance for new and existing staff including student staff.

Adhere to University policies regarding time and attendance, training, and compliance. Complete and maintain required food safety training, including Texas Food Handler Safety. Adhere to UHD cash handling guidelines. Complete paperwork related to cashier operation, including transfer of funds reports, closing reports, cash reconciliation sheets, and deposit envelopes. Other duties as assigned.

Experience working and preparing food in a restaurant, commercial, or institutional facility.

Experience with operating standard kitchen equipment.

Ability to complete and maintain Food Safety Training required by University Housing and Dining.

One year or more of experience working and preparing food in a restaurant, commercial, or institutional facility using commercial kitchen equipment.

One year or more of experience as a cashier in a food service operation utilizing point-of-sale (POS) systems.

Qualifications: The following are the job requirements for the Food Service Worker.

Knowledge of quantity food preparation. Ability to read and write in the English language.

High School diploma or GED.

Current Driver's License or State issued ID.

Minimum of two years' experience in a high-volume, food production setting. Experience in a hospital setting preparing special diets is preferred.

Ability to sustain physical activity; on feet eight hours per day. Ability to drive safely in order to operate a golf cart. Ability to use hands to operate food service equipment including mixers, slicers, fryers, blenders, etc. Frequent kneeling; stooping; bending; squatting. Frequent lifting and carrying and lowering of up to 30 pounds without assistance or buddy-lift up to 60 pounds. Frequent reaching overhead. Constant use of hands. Ability to write legibly, read and understand English to document temperatures, operate equipment, read recipes, labels on chemical bottles, to understand purpose of hazard labels on chemical containers and material safety data sheets. Regular and expected attendance. Emotional stability necessary to perform essential functions and deal with changing priorities. Ability to tolerate frequent weather changes (such as wind, snow, and rain or sleet and extreme heat) during deliveries to the units and to tolerate the differences in temperatures when entering or leaving buildings, or walk-in refrigerated storage.
