Continuing its tradition of investigative reporting, The Charlotte Observer is hiring a data journalist for McClatchys North Carolina investigations team.
The Charlotte-based position requires reporting, data analysis, acquiring public records, collaborating with other journalists and publishing both quicker turn and longer-to-develop stories.
Specifically, we are looking for a team player with a growth mindset and:
- The ability to lead reporting, interviewing and writing for stories, as well as to contribute data analysis to stories led by others.
- A good eye for accountability reporting relevant to local audiences
- Strong storytelling skills, with words and graphics
- Command of R or Python to analyze data
- Experience with a GIS tool, such as QGIS, and with data visualization tools such as Datawrapper or Flourish
- Some coding skills and a readiness to expand them
- Readiness to deploy emerging tools, including generative AI and machine learning
- A never-take-no-for-an-answer approach to obtaining public records
- Eagerness to collaborate with all newsroom reporters, editors, photo journalists and graphic storytellers
- A tested approach for ensuring accuracy to all reporting
More than 150 people move to the Charlotte region daily. This makes it even more urgent for our journalists to focus on watchdog reporting in our local communities and in that role, spotlight problems, highlight solutions and truly make a difference.
McClatchys NC I-team includes journalists based at The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer in Raleigh. They frequently collaborate on high-impact and revelatory reporting with local and statewide sweep. Examples of I-team accountability projects include: Hopes Foreclosed, Security for Sale, Private Eyes, Police Payouts, Death on the Job, Power + Secrecy, Burdened After Death and Big Poultry.
Minimum Requirements
- The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:
- College degree or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 3 years of professional journalism experience.
- Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid drivers license and vehicle insurance required (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a video journalist to produce clear and compelling explainers, features and interviews as part of its New York-based video team. Video journalists on this team are responsible for crafting insightful, informative and timely videos ranging in length from two to eight minutes. We’re looking for someone with a professional background in shooting in the field and studio, and editing. You will have a track record of creating under deadline constraints highly-visual, in-depth videos that make sense of complicated topics and developments, with a specific focus on the Journal’s core coverage areas. Exceptional technical skill and high creativity are essential for this role.
You will report to the Executive Producer of Features and Explainers.
You will:

Pitch, develop, research and write stories

Tell stories in creative ways using high-quality video, graphics and props

Produce and shoot interviews in studio, and execute creative shoots

Edit videos using a mix of footage and motion graphics

Manage multiple projects in different stages of production

Partner with reporters and editors across the newsroom to identify and produce timely video pieces

Ensure that all journalistic and legal standards are followed

Be able to work late hours and weekends both as part of a regular weekend rotation and as news developments may warrant
You have:

At least five years of experience producing informational videos, preferably in a daily news environment at a global news organization

An understanding of and an interest in The Wall Street Journal's core topic areas

Experience with multiple camera setups, including the Sony FX9, FX6, FX3 and A7s

Skills using studio and field lighting setups

A professional-level understanding of Adobe Suite, with a high level of expertise in Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator

Strong communication skills
