**Job Description**
The Device, Packaging and Process (DPP) function is a key component of Gilead's Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing (PDM) organization, providing a portfolio of technologies for selection and implementation by product teams. These technologies enable product teams to develop and execute a strategy to differentiate our products and ensure Gilead is highly competitive in commercial markets. As the **Director, Human Factors Engineering and Human-Centered Design Specialist** you will support innovation and early-stage development, helping drive project strategy based on human centered design and human factors principles and methodologies as well as lead initiatives to advance human-centered design practices within the organization.
Qualified candidates will focus on the development of devices and drug-device combination products such as pre-filled syringes and auto-injectors.
**Specific Job Responsibilities**
+ Conduct qualitative and quantitative user research to gather insights on user needs, preferences, and behaviors. Analyze research findings to identify opportunities for product and user experience improvement and innovation. Present research findings to stakeholders and provide actionable recommendations.
+ Develop and implement design strategies that prioritize user experience and accessibility, including creating personas, journey maps, and simulations to inform design decisions based on a deep and data-based understanding of the user experience and user needs.
+ Develop design concepts for devices, packaging, and instructions and create concept sketches, illustrations, and prototypes.
+ Use visual design principles to create instructional materials that are visually appealing and effective in conveying information and supporting safe and effective use of products.
+ Lead or support human factors engineering (HFE) strategies and HFE activities for device combination product design and development from feasibility, clinical development, through registration, and post-market. This includes requirements definition, use-related risk analysis, formative usability studies, instruction and training development, and summative usability studies.
+ Author HFE deliverables for device design history files and HFE sections for health authority submissions and written responses.
+ Educate team members and other internal stakeholders on the HFE development process and approach.
+ Interface and coordinate with HFE consulting firms to execute human factors engineering activities.
+ Improve internal HFE processes at Gilead to ensure consistency, compliance, and efficiency.
+ Ensure all HFE work is performed in accordance with SOPs and applicable regulatory requirements.
**Required Education, Experience & Skills:**
+ A Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, industrial design, or a related scientific field with 12+ years of relevant experience, **OR** a M.S. degree with 10+ years of relevant experience
+ Strong understanding of human-centered design principles and user research methodologies.
+ Experience with conducting qualitative and quantitative user research.
+ Proficiency in design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
+ Prototyping skills, including the ability to create physical and digital prototypes.
+ Expertise in visual design principles, including layout, typography, and color theory.
+ Experience with leading HFE efforts in support of combination product development and commercialization, including a working knowledge of human factors, design controls, and risk management regulations, standards, and guidance for medical devices and combination products.
+ Excellentverbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
+ Demonstrated ability to facilitate the interface with medical device vendors and HF consulting firms.
+ Demonstrated ability to analyze data and identify relevant design updates.
+ Must be able to write clear, concise, high-quality documents.
+ Must be able to exercise judgment within areas of ambiguity as well as established procedures and policies in order to determine and take appropriate action.
+ Experience managing team expectations for project timelines, including realistic timeline estimates for HFE activities.
+ A deepknowledge of the regulatory and compliance requirements for HFE and combination product risk management.
+ Ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence key stakeholders.
The salary range for this position is: $210,375.00 - $272,250.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. ProSidian Seeks a Deputy Human-Centered Design (HCD) Project Director to support requirements of a Federal Agency contract which supports the development of global health products/technologies, service delivery models, and other approaches that can be efficiently and effectively scaled.
Through the application of HCD, global health products, services, delivery models, and programs will better meet the needs of end users and will be designed more appropriately to enable greater demand for, and uptake of, such products and approaches and supports the Global Health (GH) Bureaus work to accelerate the introduction and scale-up of priority health technologies and interventions in support of Global Health priorities, which are:
1) Ending preventable maternal and child deaths and 2) Creating an AIDS free generation.
This work generally includes a focus on products and interventions across Infectious Disease, Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Nutrition, HIV/AIDS, Population and Reproductive Health (PRH), Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), Health Systems Strengthening (HSS), Malaria, and Tuberculosis (TB). The Deputy Human-Centered Design (HCD) Human-Centered Design (HCD) Project Director will closely oversee all activities and ensure lessons learned are shared across activities and applied to improve performance. The Deputy Human-Centered Design (HCD) Human-Centered Design (HCD) Project Director will work closely with the Activity Manager at USAID to identify and solve issues as they arise, as well as attend major briefings and manage the client relationship across all activities on a day-to-day basis.
Human-centered design is a creative approach to problem solving through Inspiration | Ideation | Implementation and is a cornerstone of our work at ProSidian Consulting. Its a process that starts with the people youre designing for and ends with new solutions that are tailor made to suit their needs.
Human-centered design is all about building a deep empathy with the people youre designing for; generating tons of ideas; building a bunch of prototypes; sharing what youve made with the people youre designing for; and eventually putting your innovative new solution out in the world.
Human-centered design consists of three phases. In the Inspiration Phase youll learn directly from the people youre designing for as you immerse yourself in their lives and come to deeply understand their needs. In the Ideation Phase youll make sense of what you learned, identify opportunities for design, and prototype possible solutions. And in the Implementation Phase youll bring your solution to life, and eventually, to market. And youll know that your solution will be a success because youve kept the very people youre looking to serve at the heart of the process.
The Deputy Human-Centered Design (HCD) Project Director must possess the following qualifications:
- Masters degree or higher in human-centered design, design, engineering, public health, business, behavioral studies, or other related field.
- At least 5 years of demonstrated technical expertise, with substantial developing country context experience, in at least one or more of the following technical areas: application of new and relevant HCD techniques that create insights into end-user actions, thoughts and behaviors; investigative methods including: ethnographic study, contextual inquiry, concept/solution testing, usability testing and similar methods; generative methods including: card sorting, affinity diagramming and participatory design sessions; cooperative design; and contextual design. Community participation, rural WASH, behavior change, field research, governance, institutional development, and private sector engagement.
- At least 2 years of demonstrated experience in a management position in design.
- Previous experience managing projects of a similar magnitude and complexity.
- Demonstrated ability to design and manage field-based research studies.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of government and civil society counterparts and donor and UN partners.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

+ Working in an Agile software development environment, team with product owners, business analysts, and product development to clarify and define business requirements as they apply to the UI.

+ Crafting UX engagements, specifically in a graphical user interface (GUI) environment, that exceed customer expectations by partnering with key product stakeholders to understand and support product business goals, advocating human-centered design (HCD) industry best practices

The likely salary range for this position is $68,000 - $92,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
