  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Food or Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product development, formulation, or food ingredient R&D.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAP software is preferred.
  • Proven expertise in lab-based development and formulation of food and beverage applications.
  • Experience with botanical, tea, herbal, or wellness-based ingredients is a strong plus.
  • The ability to optimize plant-based ingredients for taste, texture, stability, and nutritional benefit.
  • Familiarity with Food Service or CPG environments is a bonus.
  • Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A collaborative mindset with the ability to thrive in a cross-functional, fast-paced setting.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (local and overnight as needed).

About The Job

The Principal Food Scientist will adhere to best-in-class methods and practices associated with new product development, formula renovation, cost savings initiatives, and scale up to drive process effectiveness and product quality. Additionally, the role will help identify development opportunities and work collectively with the R&D Sr. Managers to develop the team's technical acumen (including mentoring and coaching). The role will also assist in formulating and administering division’s short and long range goals and objectives for business growth.

What You’ll Do
  • Effectively and independently lead new projects from the team’s initiation through commercialization, including creating and maintaining timelines, managing stakeholders, formulating, scaling up, finished product testing, and specification validation.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing sites for product batching and processing, including batch auditing, bench testing, commercial scale testing, and data analysis.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to cross‑functional teams, representing PD for CapEx projects and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Work with raw material suppliers to provide the team with new ingredient solutions and technologies.
  • Maintain laboratory, including upkeep of equipment, stocking of supplies and general cleaning of work areas.
  • Identify development opportunities and work collectively with the PD Managers to develop the team’s technical acumen (including mentoring and coaching).
  • Lead the development of processes and tools with a Continuous Improvement mindset, including developing SOPs, utilizing Lean and Six Sigma principles, and training others.
  • Support the development and execution of technical strategy, advising PD Managers on technical barriers and opportunities.
  • Serve as the Project Owner and/or Project Resource Manager in support of junior project owners.
  • Perform other related and assigned duties as necessary.
What You’ll Need – Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/Certification – Master’s degree or Ph.D. in food science, engineering, or related field of science from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience – 7–10+ years of food research and development experience, with an understanding of food chemistry, food safety, and related regulations. Functional culinary knowledge and excellent oral and written communication skills. Extensive knowledge base in hydrocolloids, emulsions, salad dressings, dipping sauces, tomato paste based products, syrups, liquid product processing methods, and/or related technologies.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Food testing concepts and techniques, food microbiology, sensory analysis, benchtop procedures, lab equipment operation and maintenance, raw materials/product interaction, food safety concepts and techniques, food regulations, culinary acumen, food processing equipment and techniques, quality assurance concepts and techniques, technical problem solving, experimental design.
  • Leadership/Management Responsibility – Ability to lead through others, direct or indirect, and develop and mentor others in the department.

Primary Purpose
