Food Scientist - Product Development
Purpose and Scope/General Summary: This position places you within the largest global poultry company. This role is based out of our US Headquarters, which is located in beautiful Northern Colorado, with quick access to national parks, hiking trails, ski slopes and numerous outdoor activities. As a Food Scientist, you will be responsible for the development of new products and improvement of existing products. You will work closely with Operations, Operational Excellent (OE), Research and Optimization (R&O), Quality Assurance (QA), Category Marketing, Innovation, Culinary, Regulatory, Procurement, and Sales teams to drive execution of the Fresh and Prepared Poultry strategies by developing, optimizing, and commercializing products. This role will be focused on product development supporting customers' product needs.
Responsibilities:
+ Execute development of new products and improvement of existing products to meet customer, brand, and operations requirements as related to cost, quality, and yield.
+ Perform pilot product development and renovation up to and through commercialization, analyzing results and making recommendations for full-scale implementation.
+ Engage directly with vendors for benchtop, pilot line, and commercial scale requests, including troubleshooting product and process opportunities in formulation functionality and shelf-life.
+ Engage with vendors in new strategic platform development, product improvement, and line extensions via technical briefs and discussions.
+ Participate in product development conversations through product sampling, technical communication, and presentations as technical touchpoint to customers related to new product development, product improvement, and specification improvement of value-added products.
+ Work closely with cross-functional teams to address quality or yield issues of individual product specifications and processes.
+ Communicate technical development activities like design of experiment, costing, data analysis, etc. to cross-functional teams with simplicity.
+ Collaborate with Operations, OE, R&O, Category Marketing, and QA teams on new product development and product/process renovation for quality and yield opportunities.
+ Work cross-functionally with Marketing, Innovation, Sales, Culinary, Operations, QA, Regulatory, and Procurement teams in accordance to stage-gate process.
+ Collaborate with sensory and R&O teams to validate sensory outcomes and shelf-life requirements.
+ Prepare technical data collection plans and results reports independently.
+ Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.

Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree in Food Science required, Degree in Meat Science, Poultry Science, Engineering, or related field strongly preferred.
+ BS & 3-5 years of relevant experience
+ MS & 0-2 years of relevant experience
+ Experience working in food manufacturing facility, operations, or continuous improvement strongly preferred.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
+ Well-versed in Project Management Systems and Recipe Development (e.g., SAP).
+ Good understanding of USDA and/or FDA guidelines with occasional support from manager.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft TEAMS / Cisco Webex.
+ Can perform the functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation

The applicant who fills this position will be eligible for the following compensation and benefits:

We are seeking a Food Scientist for our pizza group to join our R&D team in Salina, KS! As the Food Scientist, reporting to the Product Development Director, you will primarily work on our pizza brand portfolio focusing on new product development, innovation and product improvement in the retail and food service markets. Additionally, projects will include finding efficiencies and synergies in materials, evaluating ingredient alternatives, optimizing formulas, and enhancing ingredient functionality. As a part of the Pizza Products R&D Team, you will be a significant contributor to launching new products within established self-stable food. Compensation and Benefits:
The base salary range for this position is $58.500 to $97,500 annually with eligibility for a 5% annual incentive bonus that is based on organizational performance. The pay range represents the numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to education, skills, work experience, certifications, geography etc. As such, starting pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.

**Summary**
The Food Scientist is responsible for supporting the development of food products in support of the Company business needs. With minimal guidance plans and conducts multiple project assignments. Project scope to include supporting new products, quality improvements of existing products, cost optimization of existing products and technical brand maintenance.

The salary range for this position is $63,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year, based on experience and qualifications with annual bonus available (variable depending on performance).

**Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities**
+ Promotes applicable safety, regulatory, GMP requirements in lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing facilities. Assists in writing of new policy and procedures as needed.
+ Executes with minimal guidance multiple projects to grow top line volume in support of New Product Development as a % of Revenue goals, cost savings or improvements. Conducts and leads required lab, pilot plant, and plant experimentation.
+ Proficient knowledge of Product Development including: Materials, food processes, sensory testing, consumer testing, NPD stage gate process, costing, plant trials commercialization, and related processes.
+ Documents all development work accurately. This includes written documentation of lab work, product showing, and plant trials with minimal guidance.
+ Prepares accurate and timely specifications for all products developed. This includes: materials, formula, processes and finished product with minimal guidance.
+ Proficient in the knowledge of customer/consumer needs for assigned products and channels. Understands who the consumer is and how they use our products.
+ Interacts cross-functionally with Marketing, Purchasing, QA and Operations to successfully implement new product developments.
+ Leads Product Showings to evaluate products.
**Education and Experience Requirements**
Bachelor's degree in Food/Meat Science or 2 - 4 years related work experience or a Master's/PhD with 0 - 2 years of experience. Our ideal candidate will have/be:
+ Requires knowledge of the product development process from idea generation, bench top, scale up and commercialization.
+ Ability to influence necessary cross functional partners for successful implementation of projects.
+ Requires clear written and verbal communication skills.
+ Excellent analytical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
+ Knowledge of ingredients including functionality, allergen considerations and cost.
+ Should understand food manufacturing processes and the sequence of events necessary to convert raw materials to finished products.
**Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements**
1. Position is sedentary and mobile. Will require working in an office, lab and in the pilot plant.
2. May need to move light equipment or supplies from one place to another. Capable of lifting 50lbs.
3. May need to access files, supplies, and equipment.
4. Work activity that is in an office, open-partitioned, cubicle environment.
5. When in a plant environment:
6. Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors which include metal and plastic grating surfaces.
7. May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and 100% humidity.
8. May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
9. May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 db to 110 db.
10. May be exposed to all chemicals used in poultry, food, processing facility.
11. Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the Company.

**Job Description:**
**_About the Role:_**
Join our team as a Food Scientist supporting our Coffee segment at TreeHouse Foods. Based out of our Northlake, TX Coffee Center of Excellence, this role will lead the design, planning, validation, and implementation of new products, line extensions, product improvements, and technical services. With limited supervision, you will drive both internal and co-manufacturing projects, ensuring alignment with product offering requirements and supporting the growth of our coffee portfolio.
**_You'll add value to this role by performing various functions including, but not limited to:_**
+ Works collaboratively in the execution of development from bench to production scale for new products, product improvements and cost savings projects.
+ Works collaboratively with commercialization to manage project timelines and develop project success criteria.
+ Defines the formulation, nutritional and process parameters needed to develop a product which meets the project objective(s); understands the impact of these parameters to overall project.
+ Defines raw material and corresponding process, ingredient and supplier qualification processes, and finished product specifications and set-ups through corresponding systems.
+ Applies sound scientific methods in all stages of development. Including planning and executing trials, analyzing data and defining solutions to achieve project goals.
+ Create new prototypes for product development initiatives and identify, evaluate and approve potential ingredients and manufacturing suppliers.
+ Identifies opportunities for competitive market advantage and new trends in category.
+ Provide judgement and experience to ensure that an appropriate level of technical knowledge and discipline are being applied and utilized in business decisions.
+ Partner and communicate effectively with cross-functional groups: Business Unit, Co-Manufacturing, Sales, QA, Procurement, Finance, Operations and Engineering.
+ Ensure the transfer of technology to the operations team when commercializing products. Provide technical oversight of internal and external manufacturing start-ups and ongoing technical service.

Job responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Manage new product development from concept thru commercialization for PBM or fresh ready meal solutions category.
- Maintain awareness of market trends and comparative products from all major retailers, competitors and recommend product development ideas in line with those trends and coordinate interdepartmental activities.
- Provide product excellence management from co-packing products as assigned.
- Work with HQ and suppliers for packaging application.
- Maintain development and maintenance of QMS for assigned products.
- Lead process improvement for quality and cost reduction; troubleshoot for product quality and productivity; monitor product quality and improvement of co-packing and import items in the areas needed.
- Research and identify new materials, suppliers, and co-packers for new projects and existing product lines.
- Work with vendors, process engineers, food scientists, and marketing specialists to understand available technology and provide ideas, solutions, and alternatives to meet food safety, quality, costs, and customer requirements.
- Identify prospective co-packers for NPD project assigned, conduct scale-up testing and launch products working cross-functionally.
- Provide update of progress and status of all R&D projects by utilizing preferred MS project software in line with NPD process.
- Apply a wide range of food science, microbiology, and chemistry knowledge to identify the root-causes of product defects and propose preventive actions.
- Assist with special project assignments as needed.
Skills/Qualifications:
- B.S degree in food science/food technology or similar is required.
- Minimum 4 -5 years related work experience in a food manufacturing company.
- Knowledge and experience working with vendors for new ingredient/alternate supplier sourcing.
- Experience in food product development and commercialization, with experience in processing and process flow design.
- Food packaging application experience a plus.
- Proficiency in MS Office and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with NPD process a plus.
- Self-directed with the ability to work independently as well as with cross-functional groups.
- Bilingual in Korean preferred.
- This position is fully onsite at our Fullerton location. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.
- This position requires travel (approximately 20%) to company sites, including overnight stays.
