S UMMARY OF J OB P URPOSE AND F UNCTION:
The Veterinary Assistant supports the veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring q uality veterinary care for all p ets, advocates for p ets, educates clients on all aspects of p et health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment.
E SSENTIAL R ESPONSIBILITIES AND T ASKS:

- Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to ensure the best quality p et care and to maximize the veterinarian's and veterinary technician's produc tivity.
- C ommunicate with veterinarian, veterinary technicians and all other associate s to maintain the flow of patients.
- Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. This includes performing or preparing procedures that do not req uire veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance, completing preparatory work for other procedures, ensuring that clients and p ets are comfortable in the hospital, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical p ets as allowed in the state practice acts .
-Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, p et health needs, hospital services and other issues.
- Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
- Ensure the safety of p ets, clients a nd associate s by utilizing safe restraining technique, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs.
- Assist with surgery as applicable.
- Utilize technical skills to the fullest, within stat e practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties.
- Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
- Other job duties as assigned.

**Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine** is seeking applicants for an **Inpatient Veterinary Assistant** to work in the Intermediate Care (IMC), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Emergency Room (ER) section of our Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital. The individual in this position will work directly with the IMC clinicians and rotating intern doctors to help facilitate quality care and patient flow through the IMC, ICU, and ER.

This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. + Perform job duties with speed and accuracy and work as essential personnel, providing care for patients after hours, on weekends and holidays.

+ May be responsible for, or assist in, billing clients, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks

**Qualifications**
Depending upon a combination of education and experience, the finalist selected for this position will be hired as a Veterinary Assistant - Inpatient and assigned levels II or III.
**Level II:** Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
**Level III:** Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
**Substitutions allowed for Experience:**
Degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience.

**Qualifications**
Depending upon a combination of education and experience, the finalist selected for this position will be hired as a Veterinary Assistant - Inpatient and assigned levels II or III.
**Level II:** Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
**Level III:** Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.
**Substitutions allowed for Experience:**
Degrees may be accepted in lieu of experience.

Preferred Education/Licenses: Certificate of completion from a NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Preferred Experience: Must be able to perform all required skills of NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant programs at a level that aids in the efficiency of the practice.
A Day in the Life of a Banfield Veterinary Assistant
The Vet Assistant provides professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times, making sure that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital. You will use your technical skills on a daily basis, within state practice acts and as outlined in the NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant skills and duties. Other responsibilities include:
