Job Description

Overview

Cambrex is seeking multiple openings at various levels (including Sr. Research Scientist, Principal Research Scientist, Senior Principal Research Scientist, and Research Investigator) for the Process Chemistry department. Positions involve routine and complex organic synthesis, purification, and analytical evaluation as part of a process chemistry research and development team. The chemists will optimize synthetic routes to active pharmaceutical ingredients for purity, reproducibility, scalability, and yield. Experience in process chemistry R&D is desirable. Roles may require leading process chemistry portions of customer projects and potentially supervising a group of process chemists; they will frequently present work to internal teams, clients, or regulatory agencies.

Work is conducted in a fast-paced environment focused on science, manufacturing integration, and collaboration with manufacturing and GMP operations to transfer processes to production.

Responsibilities
  • Perform multistep organic syntheses, isolation, and purification of targeted products independently; contribute to optimizing reactions, isolations, and purifications.
  • Proficiently analyze starting materials, reaction mixtures, intermediates, and products using appropriate instrumentation.
  • Coordinate project activities and resource usage with chemistry and analytical laboratory staff.
  • Generate summaries and reports on completed experimental work; routinely present results in internal meetings and teleconferences with customers.
  • Promote teamwork and cooperation within the group; conduct laboratory operations safely and in compliance with the company chemical hygiene plan.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations in chemical disposal and practices.
  • Address routine administrative requirements in a timely fashion; maintain effective communication with project teams and customers.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and GMP operations to coordinate equipment and activities; assist in transferring processes to the manufacturing team.
  • Independently design and propose new synthetic processes for drug substances; may serve as process chemistry lead for customer projects and set priorities for the team.
  • Maintain familiarity with relevant literature in organic chemistry and related techniques.
  • Participate in setting strategy and timing for customer proposal requests; present experimental work externally as required.

Senior Research Scientist - Specific Skill & Competency Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge in synthetic chemistry transformations, reaction mechanisms, and retrosynthetic analysis.
  • Growing knowledge of related scientific disciplines; developing knowledge of process chemistry principles and GMP/ICH guidelines.
  • Sound experimental design for process chemistry development; contributes innovative ideas in chemistry discussions.
  • Ability to work on multiple sub-tasks in parallel and to use scientific literature to support research.
  • Strong safety practices, with contributions to safety investigations and continuous improvement.
  • Recognized as a technical expert and contributor; may publish or present externally.

Principal Research Scientist - Specific Skill & Competency Requirements

  • Leading-edge knowledge in advanced synthetic, mechanistic, and retrosynthetic analysis; strong knowledge of process chemistry principles and drug substance manufacturing requirements.
  • GMP/CMC/ICH guidelines experience; documentation and batch records in GMP environments.
  • Design and independently execute experiments/projects; contributes to project direction.
  • Advanced use of literature to support client projects and solve complex problems; strong safety leadership.
  • Expected to author or co-author scientific manuscripts or presentations; opportunities for publication and external speaking.

Senior Principal Research Scientist - Specific Skill & Competency Requirements

  • Expert knowledge in advanced synthetic chemistry and principal knowledge in process chemistry and manufacturing requirements.
  • Extensive GMP/CMC/ICH experience; documentation and batch record execution in GMP settings.
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems; cross-department collaboration to advance innovative processes and technology.
  • Strong leadership, client management, and publication/presentation activity expectations.

Research Investigator - Specific Skill & Competency Requirements

  • Expert knowledge in advanced synthetic chemistry and process chemistry/pharma manufacturing requirements.
  • Substantial GMP/CMC/ICH experience and batch record documentation in GMP environments.
  • Developing expertise with Quality Management System investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Leadership in safety practices and recognition as an expert in the field; opportunities to publish and present externally.

Education, Experience & Licensing

  • Senior: PhD in Organic Chemistry with 0-4+ years (or MS with 11+ years; BS with 13+ years) in related industry.
  • Principal: PhD with 2-8+ years (or MS with 15+ years; BS with 17+ years).
  • Senior Principal: PhD with 8-12+ years (or MS with 18+ years; BS with 20+ years).
  • Research Investigator: PhD with 12+ years (or MS with 20+ years; BS with 22+ years).
