The USDS-Platform and Community Integrity (PaCI) team is missioned to: - Protect U.S. TikTok users, including and beyond content consumers, creators, advertisers; - Secure platform health and community experience authenticity; - Build infrastructures, platforms and technologies, as well as to collaborate with many cross-functional teams and stakeholders. The PaCI team works to minimize the damage of inauthentic behaviors on TikTok platforms, covering multiple classical and novel community and business risk areas such as account integrity, engagement authenticity, anti-spam, API abuse, growth fraud, live streaming security and financial safety, etc. In this team, you'll have a unique opportunity to have first-hand exposure to the strategy of the company in key security initiatives, especially in building scalable and robust, intelligent and privacy-safe, secure, and product-friendly systems and solutions. Our challenges are not some regular day-to-day technical puzzles -- You'll be part of a team that's developing novel solutions to first-seen challenges of a non-stop evolution of a phenomenal product eco-system. The work needs to be fast, transferrable, while still down to the ground to make quick and solid differences. In order to enhance collaboration and cross-functional partnerships, among other things, at this time, our organization follows a hybrid work schedule that requires employees to work in the office 3 days a week, or as directed by their manager/department. The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $136800 - $228000 annually.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location. General Summary:
The Data Scientist at the Stone Living Lab (SLL), UMass Boston is responsible for curating, managing and generating ways to make SLL data publicly accessible in a way that obeys FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse) best practices. The Data Scientist will work with PIs, partners, and students to create, organize and maintain SLL data management processes as well as generate public-facing products using SLL data. This role will be housed within the School for the Environment and will work on SLL projects.
The Data Scientist will play a crucial role in preparing SLL data for major repositories (e.g. the Environmental Data Repository ( DataONE ( PANGAEA Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science ( NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), IOOS/NERACOOS), to provide long-term public availability, robust metadata generation, and open APIs. They will work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including community organizations, government agencies, academic partners and internal UMB partners to ensure that SLL's data is managed to the highest standards and communicated widely and equitably to support climate resilience.
Examples of Duties:
1. Data Management and Infrastructure
- Design and implement robust data pipelines for ingestion, validation, transformation, and storage that follow best practices for the international data community.
- Develop or maintain database systems (e.g. PostgreSQL, cloud storage, APIs) to ensure efficient access and querying.
- Work with scientists to ensure standardization and interoperability across different projects (e.g., consistent formats, metadata standards).
- Automate data collection and cleaning processes from instruments, sensors, or external sources.
- Advise on data privacy and ethical considerations, especially for public-facing platforms.
2. Data Curation and Quality Control
- Work with scientists (for domain specifics) to perform data validation and anomaly detection to ensure integrity and consistency.
- Work with scientists to create and maintain metadata documentation for datasets (descriptions, provenance, usage guidelines).
- Create archiving protocols and pipelines for future use.
- Manage version control of datasets and data schemas.
- Establish best practices for data governance, archiving, and FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

- Create pipelines between SLL data and the Ocean Biogeographic Information Service (OBIS) and the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) for international representation of SLL data.

- Assist researchers to analyze datasets to support scientific objectives and extract insights from ecological, biological, or environmental questions.
- (Depending on domain knowledge) Use statistical and machine learning techniques where appropriate to model trends or forecast outcomes.
4. Public-Facing Information and App Development Support
- Work with scientists and the education team to build data-driven applications, dashboards, or interactive tools for the public, stakeholders, or decision-makers.

6. Documentation and Reporting
- Contribute to scientific publications, reports, and grant proposals by providing data summaries and figures.

Job Summary:
This role will be at the forefront of our AI-driven initiatives, working with a diverse team of experts in biology, bioinformatics, and machine learning. The responsibilities include developing and implementing innovative data analysis pipelines, predictive models, and visualization tools that will contribute to the understanding of complex and varied health datasets. These efforts will support the delivery of data products to our users in order to improve their health outcomes. The role requires working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to extract valuable insights and translate them into actionable knowledge. The candidate requires a proven track record of applying AI and machine learning techniques, ideally to healthcare datasets. They must have excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively, as well as strong communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Essential Functions

- Data Science
- Work closely with our scientists to understand complex, biological and healthcare datasets and apply this domain-specific knowledge to transform raw data into suitable formats for downstream analysis.
- Clean, preprocess, and curate diverse biological datasets, ensuring data quality and integrity.
- Engineer appropriate datasets to support the development and deployment of data products, some of which are based on machine / deep learning models.

- Build high quality custom software to support any activities across the various technology groups.

- Communicate insights, results, and analyses to stakeholders using advanced visualization techniques.
- Research
- Contribute to interdisciplinary discussions to guide experimental design and data collection.
To include, but are not limited to the following:
- A 4-year degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, math, computer science, physics, or engineering from an accredited college or university.
- 4+ years proven experience in a data science or quantitative analysis role.
- Demonstrable proficiency in handling and processing big data sets from various sources, including, SQL, relational DBMS and cloud services.
- High proficiency in Python. Solid experience with other languages, such as R and Julia is a bonus.
- Extensive experience in applied statistics and machine/deep learning methods.
- The ability to speak and write fluent English.
- Experience with healthcare data and the regulatory environment associated with the application of AI is a bonus.
