ESS is seeking a hands-on Energy Storage Communications Engineer to own the development and implementation of the communication interface subsystem responsible for translating and managing control and monitoring signals between our BESSs and third-party energy assets, including site controllers, solar/wind inverters, SCADA systems, and utility EMS platforms. This role bridges the digital communication layer between heterogeneous energy systems and our storage technology, ensuring high reliability, protocol compliance, and low-latency performance in real-world grid environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the architecture, design, and implementation of the BESS communication gateway subsystem.
- Develop and maintain protocol translation logic between our native system protocols and external standards (e.g., CAN, PCAN, RTU-serial, TCP/IP, ethernet, Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, SunSpec, OPC UA, IEEE 2030.5).
- Work with inverter vendors, solar/wind developers, and SCADA/EMS teams to ensure end-to-end communication interoperability.
- Collaborate closely with BESS controls, software, and system integration teams to ensure tight synchronization between internal control logic and external site commands.
- Design fail-safe communication architectures, including watchdogs, fallback states, and redundant links to meet grid reliability requirements.
- Support the creation and enforcement of cybersecurity best practices in communication interfaces.
- Troubleshoot real-time system integration issues during commissioning and operation.
- Assist in the development of commissioning tools, diagnostics, and logging utilities related to communication performance.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
- Experience working in energy systems integration, preferably in battery energy storage, inverter development, or grid-tied renewable power systems.
- Strong understanding of power system communication protocols: CAN, PCAN, RTU-serial, TCP/IP, ethernet, Modbus (RTU/TCP), DNP3, IEC 61850, OPC UA, SunSpec, IEEE 2030.5.
- Experience implementing protocol translation on embedded platforms or industrial PCs using Python, C/C++, or IEC 61131-3 (e.g., Structured Text).
- Familiarity with site-level controls and supervisory systems (EMS, SCADA, or DERMS).
- Practical experience with commissioning tools such as packet sniffers, protocol analyzers, or serial bus monitors.
- Familiarity with power system controls and telemetry signals (active/reactive power, frequency response, volt-var control, etc.).
- Working knowledge of cybersecurity principles for industrial communication (TLS, secure key exchange, firewall configuration).
- Experience with renewable energy plant integration (PV + BESS or wind + BESS).
- Experience with protocol gateway platforms (e.g., HMS Anybus, Moxa, Kepware, or custom Linux gateways).
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements or grid interconnection standards (e.g., IEEE 1547, CA Rule 21, FERC 841).
- Experience with remote diagnostics, over-the-air updates, or edge computing for industrial assets.

Pivot Energy is seeking an Energy Storage Engineer to join our team and work across disciplines to support the technical evaluation, selection, and development of battery energy storage in Pivot's project pipeline. This role will be instrumental in guiding Pivot Energy's procurement, partnerships, and project development decisions in the rapidly evolving energy storage landscape.
The Energy Storage Engineer will provide guidance to inform market offerings to ensure the successful evaluation and execution of storage projects, contributing a strong understanding of battery technologies, procurement & partnership decisions, battery operational parameters, battery system commissioning knowledge, and lifecycle economics. The Energy Storage Engineer will work closely with team members on the Strategy & Engineering teams on energy storage design engineering, equipment reviews and selection, and coordinate with third-party engineering consultants to smoothly navigate our pipeline between our Market Strategy, Engineering, Preconstruction, and Project Management teams. This role is highly collaborative and will require exceptional communication and collaborative skills in addition to technical expertise.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support design review and analysis for energy storage equipment, prioritizing design and product quality for long-term operation and ownership.
- Evaluate and compare different Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) vendors and products from technological and operational perspectives, prioritizing long-term operation and ownership.
- Establish relationships with BESS equipment providers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), BESS Software vendors, and other technical solutions to make our BESS projects a success.
- Maintain an internal database of BESS and OEM equipment providers and vendors
- Evaluate vendor proposals for BESS, including pricing, technology, warranties, service offerings, and commercial terms
- Complete comparative assessments of energy storage companies and integrators based on technical capabilities, execution track record, and risk factors.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to create equipment specifications, procurement guidance, and project terms for Energy Storage-related equipment, including batteries, inverters, controls, etc.
- Research and evaluate different energy storage technologies and provide recommendations for the best options for Pivot Energy markets & projects.
- Collaborate with Pivot's engineering teams and external consultants to develop design documents for energy storage projects, including SLDs, site layouts, inverter specifications, testing criteria, etc.
- Work with the Project Engineering team to validate commissioning-related activities and guide them to conduct site acceptance testing of energy storage equipment
- Ensure vendor offerings align with project-specific technical requirements, timelines, and interconnection constraints
- Establish and maintain engineering requirements for energy storage projects
- Analyze and track warranty, degradation data, performance, and availability guarantees offered by different vendors
- Coordinate the division of responsibilities and balance of systems with different Pivot teams for projects involving energy storage installation and commissioning.
- Engage with vendors, integrators, and OEMS for different DC Block, AC Block, PCS, and software that can be used in Pivot's projects
- Provide technical and product support for PPA negotiations and contract executions, as required
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on system integration, safety standards, control strategies, contracting, and execution phases
- Clearly articulate findings in clear, actionable reports and presentations for stakeholders as required
- Willingness to travel on an ad-hoc basis as needed, including travel to quarterly retreats in Denver, Colorado

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in energy storage system design, testing, commissioning, or integration.
- Knowledge of battery storage technologies (Li-ion, Zinc, flow batteries, etc.) and key performance indicators (round-trip efficiency, degradation, cycle life, etc.)
- Experience with Tier 1 LiFP battery products, their operating characteristics, and multiple OEMs for BESS systems
- Knowledge of product defects, common issues and concerns, and quality of different BESS products
- Experience with BMS (Battery Management Systems) and EMS (Energy Management Systems).
- Experience with commercial & industrial (C&I) energy storage projects at the distributed generation level (preferred).
- Operational knowledge of energy storage controls and/or modeling software
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with an aptitude for building trust and rapport
- Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects and tasks
- Prior experience in procurement, vendor selection, RFP management, or technical due diligence

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The estimated base salary range for this position is 100,000 - 135,000, depending on relevant experience, along with eligibility for the company's substantial bonus plan, with a target bonus of 30% of annual salary (prorated in the first year based on start date). Compensation will be based on factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Job Description Position Overview As a Manager, Renewable Engineering (Energy Storage), you will lead a team that performs engineering activities for utility scale energy storage projects throughout the United States and will support projects in certain selected Non-US markets. This role will lead a team of engineers ranging from 0 – 5 years work experience that provide safe and efficient design and augmentation strategies to deploy against customer and market requirements. This position will be located in our Chicago headquarters and will report to the Director, Renewable Engineering (Energy Storage). Responsibilities Provide coaching and direction to a team of motivated energy storage engineering professionals Provide administrative support for your team, including managing time off, expenses, goal setting, and providing both informal and formal performance reviews Together with your direct reports and other engineers on the battery storage engineering team, aid in the advancement and execution of battery storage projects, including the following: Oversee preliminary project design in support of pricing for commercial offtake Review detailed project design with the engineer of record on construction projects Support the project management team with activities during construction including design reviews, commissioning, and performance testing Review and approve all battery performance test results Refine and create scope of work documents as required Refine and develop tools to support the engineering design and associated capital and operating costs of energy storage including augmentation plans Actively participate in contract negotiations with customers on technical scope, with EPC contractors as part of the project management team and with suppliers on scope, schedule, warranty and performance guarantee issues with our procurement team. In conjunction with our procurement team, evaluate and vet new suppliers and products that can be deployed in the near term (less than 5 years) Support the Development team with siting and permitting activities especially regarding fire safety Continue to maintain strong storage project safety program and facilitate support of development in permitting efforts Provide support for project acquisition opportunities as they emerge. Identify areas for improvement to existing team processes and execute plans to implement such initiatives Develop, maintain and enhance a network of technical consultants to support energy storage including independent engineers, fire safety engineers and others as appropriate. Represent the Energy Storage team internally and externally as required Work closely with the Electrical Engineering, SCADA, Project Management, Asset Management and Procurement teams to ensure successful project execution Minimum Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Engineering required. 5+ years professional experience Up to 25% travel will be required. Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
