**Job Description:**
THE OPPORTUNITY
Executive Editor, Picture Books & Novelty, will identify, acquire, and develop high-quality and commercial picture books, board books, and novelty books for the Children's Book Group, under the direction of the Editorial Director, with a goal of fulfilling revenue growth and developing opportunities for IP exploitation across all divisions of the company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Acquire and edit 15-20 titles per year, focusing primarily on commercially-driven picture books and novelty. Proactively identify, evaluate, and pursue opportunities for new publishing and development/adaptation of existing IP.
+ Manage all stages of each title's print/digital lifecycle, including review of all passes; coordination with production, design, and freelancers; drafting of copy and metadata; and maintenance of reprints/backlist.
+ Collaborate cross-departmentally with marketing, publicity, sales, sub rights, and others. Work inter-divisionally with Scholastic Reading Events (Book Fairs) to maximize commercial opportunities and meet corporate business goals.
+ Establish and develop relationships with literary agents, author, illustrators, and other partners. Negotiate terms directly with agents, licensors, packagers, and international publishers.
+ Responsible for title-level P&L creation to meet profitability metrics for picture books.
+ Attend conferences and trade shows as needed and lead internal/external presentations.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Executive Editor Manga & Graphix will build and manage a focused list of manga, light novels, manhwa and other content, with direction from the publisher, to fulfill revenue growth for Graphix that ties into Scholastic's business goals by publishing manga and comics that speak directly to elementary, middle grade, and teen audiences.

+ Acquire and edit 8-12 titles per year, focusing primarily on manga for a middle-grade audience. Build and manage Scholastic's line of manga publishing, reporting to the Publisher, Graphix. Publishing goals may extend to include light novels from Japan, manhwa and other content from Asian publishing markets that are suitable for publication in the US. Proactively identify, evaluate, and pursue opportunities for new publishing and development/adaptation of existing IP.

The Rockefeller University Press (RUP) publishes a portfolio of biomedical research journals: The Journal of Cell Biology, The Journal of Experimental Medicine, The Journal of General Physiology, and the newly launched Journal of Human Immunity. RUP also publishes the Life Science Alliance journal in alliance with EMBO Press and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. The RUP portfolio supports both Gold open access and hybrid publishing models to allow as many researchers as possible to find appropriate publication outlets. All editorial decisions are made in conjunction with active academic scientists, and peer-review operations, pre-press production, marketing, and institutional sales are carried out at the RUP offices. Overview
The Executive Editor for _The Journal of Experimental Medicine_ ( _JEM)_ leads a team of professional staff Scientific Editors working in concert with the journal's team of Academic Editors ( to publish high-quality science and ensure the continuing success of this long-established, preeminent journal in the biomedical sciences. _JEM_ was established in 1896 and is a high-impact outlet for publishing novel conceptual insight into immunology, cancer biology, vascular biology, microbial pathogenesis, neuroscience, and stem cell biology.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Rockefeller University Press (RUP), the Executive Editor is responsible for the administration of _JEM;_ maintaining a fair peer review process; selection of all content published in _JEM;_ writing for, commissioning for, and promoting the journal; and ensuring _JEM_ 's continuing development through attendance at meetings and institutional visits. The Executive Editor is responsible for tracking and reporting on journal performance, developing and implementing a strategic plan for the journal, and serving as _JEM_ 's main representative to the scientific community. As a member of the RUP leadership team, the Executive Editor contributes to the advancement of RUP.
Key duties of the Executive Editor are as follows:
**Strategic and Editorial Leadership:**
+ Develop and implement a 3- to 5-year strategic plan to further _JEM_ 's importance to biomedical researchers, informed by competitive analysis and bibliometrics; modify journal strategy as needed
+ Manage a team of staff Scientific Editors, including recruitment, supervision, training, oversight of editorial decisions, performance evaluation, and providing strategic leadership to ensure high editorial standard and team effectiveness
+ Recruit and appoint Academic Editors and members of the Editorial Advisory Board, focusing on appropriate representation
+ Collaborate with Executive Editors of other RUP journals to develop and operationalize portfolio-level strategies to ensure strategic alignment across the Press
+ Monitor key journal metrics and strategic initiatives, with regular reporting to Scientific Editors, Academic Editors, and journal Editorial Board
+ Collaborate across journals in developing and enforcing editorial policies, including journal ethics policies that ensure compliance with international standards (COPE, ICMJE, WAME) for publication ethics and research integrity
+ Monitor emerging research integrity challenges (e.g., AI-generated content, image manipulation, papermill activity) and work collaboratively across journals to implement proactive detection strategies
+ Work collaboratively with Executive Editor, _Life Science Alliance,_ and Editor-in-Chief, _Journal of Human Immunity,_ to transfer manuscripts to those journals, where appropriate
**Community Engagement:**
+ Serve as the public face and ambassador for _JEM_ within the scientific community by leading outreach initiatives, building relationships with stakeholders, representing the journal at events, identifying emerging research trends, soliciting high-quality submissions, and championing the journal's values and mission to enhance its visibility, influence, and reputation in the field
+ Create and implement a plan to enhance and increase journal recruitment efforts through Editor site visits and meetings, and monitor metrics indicating success of manuscript recruitment efforts regularly to ensure strategic goals are met
+ Work with Scientific Editors to use _JEM_ front matter to increase community outreach and engagement and enhance author recruitment, assessing specific strategic goals for front matter and adjusting as needed
+ In conjunction with Communications and Marketing, develop strategies to highlight the journal content and policies and increase article usage
**Operational Management:**
+ Manage day-to-day operations of the journal, including peer review processes and other editorial operations
+ Manage an editorial budget - including travel, meeting sponsorship, board meetings, and editorial support
+ Manage updates related to the manuscript submission and peer review system (eJournalPress), including ongoing training and adherence to best practices
+ Work collaboratively with Director of Publishing Technologies, production department, and preflight department to develop and propagate best practices to ensure fast and accurate production of accepted articles
Qualifications
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline
+ Experience as an author with a publication record
+ Minimum of 4 years of journal editorial experience
+ Demonstrated ability to lead editorial teams
+ Experience managing journal strategy at journal- and portfolio-level

**Work Location and Travel:**

**Your New Role.**
The **Executive Editor** is A LEADER ON CNN's features management team, executing a creative editorial vision with hands-on enthusiasm. The ideal candidate will be a strong people manager who has run reporters and managed writers and editors - someone who understands how to make great things happen across teams and collaborate across a newsroom. The best candidate will have the steely will of an editor-in-chief with the word-by-word focus of a hungry junior editor.
**Your Role Accountabilities.**
+ Lead and inspire teams that create features journalism, including profiles, news, explainers, explorations, investigations, riffs, and work that defies categorization.
+ Oversee stories of all lengths and speeds, ranging from deeply serious to playfully irreverent, including visually led storytelling.
+ Shape and execute editorial strategy with precision, balancing creative vision with hands-on editing.
+ Collaborate across newsroom disciplines - from hard news to visuals to video - to produce cohesive, compelling content.
+ Support reporters from idea to reporting plan to execution, helping shape stories with clarity and purpose.
+ Champion unconventional ideas and help turn them into impactful journalism.
+ Make key editorial decisions, including greenlighting, spiking, and allocating resources.
+ Manage multiple stories and long-term projects simultaneously.
+ Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and editorial excellence.
+ Provide empathetic and direct leadership, mentoring editorial talent and supporting team growth.
**Qualifications & Experience.**
+ Minimum 10 years of editorial experience, with a strong background in features journalism.
+ Proven success managing editorial teams and collaborating across departments.
+ Exceptional editing talent, both hands-on and strategic.
+ Strong editorial judgment and decision-making skills.
+ Experience producing profiles, explainers, investigations, and visually led stories.
+ Deep understanding of audience engagement and service journalism.
+ Strength in multitasking and managing complex editorial workflows.
+ Ability to stand strong for a vision in the face of adversity.
+ Empathetic and direct management style, with a commitment to team development.
**Desirable Qualities.**
+ Exceptional story-crafting instincts, with strong opinions about how stories should be told.
+ A working theory on how a profile should be done - and a love of chasing down gossip heard at dinner parties.
+ Ability to turn a wisp of an idea into a fully formed story.
+ A healthy skepticism of press junkets.
+ A belief that no pleasure is a "guilty pleasure" - if it delights, it may deserve a headline; joy is a valid editorial lens.
