CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Colorado State University ( CSU ) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is hiring a Wildlife Biologist to join a team of natural resource professionals supporting installation needs at Beale Air Force Base ( AFB ), California. This is a field and office-based position that will assist with the implementation of a variety of projects identified in the Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan ( INRMP ) for the installation. The position will provide field and technical support to the Beale AFB natural resource program including preparing maintaining restoration sites, helping with species surveys (including special status species), rare plant surveys, and conducting grazing monitoring. In addition, the position will support other natural resource program support activities including data collection, construction monitoring, and helping with the implementation of other INRMP projects. Work location is at Beale AFB , Yuba County, California.
Beale AFB is an approximately 23,000-acre installation located in Yuba County, California. The base is located east of Marysville and Yuba City, about 40 miles north of Sacramento in the rolling hills of Northern California.
Required Job Qualifications
Required:
+ Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology or closely related area
+ Experience in field biology (terrestrial and/or aquatic wildlife issues including species biology, species habitat requirements, and ecology, especially for endangered species)
+ Experience performing wildlife surveys with the flora and fauna of central/northern California or nearby areas.
+ Experience writing and reviewing survey memos and technical reports.
+ Experienced and proficient with ArcPro; collecting spatial data in the field and converting to standardized GIS format, as well as creating maps and figures.
+ Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and requirements regarding environmental protections (e.g., Sikes Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, NEPA , etc.).
+ Able to work in harsh environments (temperatures > 100 degrees in the summer and near-freezing temperatures in the winter), walk long distances on uneven ground.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Applicants should address a minimum of two skills from the following:
+ Hold or be able to obtain a Master Bander permit (for avian species using nest boxes)
+ Experienced banding nestlings.
+ Hold or be able to obtain a special status species survey permit for western yellow-billed cuckoo, vernal pool fairy shrimp, and/or vernal pool tadpole shrimp.
+ Experience identifying California avian species by call.
+ Background in at least one area for the following: herpetology, invertebrate zoology, entomology, mammalogy, and/or bat survey work.
+ Familiar with vernal pools and fairy shrimp.
+ Knowledge of and experience with military Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans ( INRMP ).
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ Master's Degree in wildlife biology or closely related area and at least 2 years of experience in field biology (terrestrial and/or aquatic wildlife issues including species biology, species habitat requirements, and ecology, especially for endangered species)

+ Responsible for releasing and dressing of birds in relation to scheduled hunts.

+ Operation of the trap and 5-stand sporting clays stations.
+ Coordination of canoe and kayak launches along with transportation to these launch sites.
+ Maintain the lawn areas around River Wildlife.
+ Responsible for proper handling of all firearms by guests and members while on any of the gun ranges or hunt fields along with proper handling and maintenance of personal firearm.

**Skills/Requirements**

This position exists to plan and facilitate statewide programs for the prevention, detection, and control of wildlife diseases in accordance with Section of Wildlife policies, priorities, programs and goals; and to respond to emergency disease threats that may impact wildlife, domestic animals, or humans. This position will support the Wildlife Health Program and Wildlife Research Scientists in planning, executing and reporting wildlife-health related surveillance, management, and original research on game species of Minnesota. This position will provide technical expertise related to safe capture and handling of fish and wildlife for purposes of management, research, and restoration. The position will disseminate information and provide technical expertise to Wildlife staff, other natural resources professionals, and the general public.
Responsibilities include:
+ Provide technical direction, development, and implementation of Department programs to detect and manage wildlife diseases, with primary emphasis of game species.
+ Assist and advise personnel with the Division, Wildlife Section, and Tribal Nations in activities including chemical immobilization, safe animal capture and handling methods, biosecurity, and euthanasia techniques.
+ Provide professional veterinary services to the Division, Wildlife Section, and Fish Health Program by facilitating access to presription drugs, ensuring regulatory compliance with prescription drug usage and record keeping, and providing disease treatment and management recommendations.
+ Recommend and develop professional working agreements with other agencies to enhance the Department's efforts to address wildlife diseases, and where necessary, to obtain diagnostic and other professional services. Represent the Department at both technical and policy levels regarding wildlife disease issues in Minnesota.
+ Provide veterinary consultation for elk restoration project, including chemical immobilization services, safe capture, health testing, clinical veterinary services, and advanced technical expertise on veterinary medical aspects of wildlife translocation and species reintroduction.
+ Provide consultation and guidance to the Populations and Regulations Program and DNR Enforcement division regarding disease risk and health concerns related to captive and feral species.
This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete an annual telework agreement.
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited college of veterinary medicine.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Minnesota within 6 months of hire.
+ Bachelor's degree in Fish and Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Veterinary Science, or other closely related field.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other licensures necessary to purchase, possess, and administer drugs for chemical immobilization or disease prevention and treatment.
+ Two (2) years of veterinarian experience with North American non-captive, free ranging wildlife including capture and handling, chemical immobilization with controlled substances or other pharmaceuticals and disease surveillance methods.
+ Experience forming collaborative relationships with state, federal, Tribal, and academic partners to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
+ Knowledge of fish and wildlife diseases and management principles, diagnostic testing, laboratory procedures and safety, epidemiology and public health principles, biostatistics, and methods of disease prevention and control.
+ Ability to collect biological samples from various wildlife species for diagnostic purposes, perform field necropsies, follow established protocols, and perform veterinary supportive care procedures.
+ Knowledge of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and other wildlife diseases, wildlife ecology and wildlife management, wildlife research methods, analysis, and experimental design.

+ Ability to design, implement, and publish scientific research projects on free-ranging wildlife to inform wildlife management decisions.
+ Experience with humane, live-capture methods for game species including cervids, furbearers, carnivores, small mammals, waterfowl, and other game birds.
+ Ability to communicate with division and department leadership, the public, field staff, collaborative partners, and legislators.
+ Professional speaking experience to legislatures, conservation commissions, and other leadership organizations on wildlife health issues.

  • Previous experience in the termite, pest, or wildlife control industry is preferred, but we are willing to train the individual who believes in themselves and can exceed our expectations
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work from ladders
