Mechanical Design Engineer, Emerging Technologies

Join X-energy as a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of Emerging Technology products, including microreactors and space reactors.

This role is responsible for maturing component technologies and new reactor products from concept into early production. Responsibilities include engineering design and development of mechanical systems, structures, and components, such as Reactor Internal Structures, Graphite Core Components, Nuclear Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Helium Circulators, Cooling Systems, Shielding Systems, or Nuclear Auxiliary Systems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop mechanical/physical concepts, design and support development of processes to create or identify structures, systems, and components (SSCs) for use in nuclear products or facilities with a focus on nuclear safety.
  • Identify, collect, and document applicable requirements, interfaces, design basis and criteria by coordinating with key stakeholders/systems engineers and support identifying applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Plan and perform the analysis required to assess aspects of the SSCs to ensure they can perform their intended functions and meet technical specifications and design requirements.
  • Perform computations utilizing hand calculations and analytical tools for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other scoping calculations as required.
  • Create and maintain CAD-generated engineering models of reactor SSCs.
  • Integrate design activities across engineering team members, partners, and suppliers and perform supporting scoping and sizing calculations to downselect design features to meet design requirements.
  • Develop innovative mechanical solutions to refine and deploy concepts, technologies, and designs associated with X-energy developed reactors.
  • Support the assessment of SSCs for manufacturability as well as assembly and integration considerations.
  • Write and develop design documentation including design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings in accordance with applicable procedures.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or related engineering discipline from an accredited institution required.
  • 10+ years of experience in an engineering role required.
  • Proficiency with engineering hand calculations is required.
  • Experience designing and developing mechanical or fluid systems, assemblies, or components.
  • Experience in use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and product lifecycle management (PLM) software.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with commercial nuclear power plant operations.
  • Professional experience in commercial nuclear power as well as design, qualification, licensing, and construction to ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section III and/or Section VIII.
  • Experience with NRC regulations and licensing requirements for safety-related systems.

The Co-Op student will have a unique opportunity to contribute to Emerging Technologies initiatives in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. They will be involved in the implementation of innovative solutions, including new manufacturing methods in upstream and downstream processing, as well as process analytical technology (PAT) sensors and modeling to support next-generation manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals.

You will be responsible for:

  • Perform a variety of lab experiments to support biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, including cell culture, downstream processing, and formulation of drug substance.
  • Set up and operate small-scale bioreactors, perform offline assays, and analyze spectral data to ensure flawless execution of experiments.
  • Conduct comparative experiments using PAT and other process outputs while contributing to the modeling of the biochemical data for analysis and optimization.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field. Equivalent experience in these fields will also be considered.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Strong coursework background in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, or a related field.
  • Experience with programming languages such as R, Matlab, Python, etc., for data modeling and trend analysis
  • Permanently authorized to work in the U.S., must not require sponsorship of an employment visa (e.g., H-1B or green card) at the time of application or in the future.  Students currently on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT usually requires future sponsorship for long term employment and do not meet the requirements for this program unless eligible for an alternative long-term status that does not require company sponsorship.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge or experience in cell culture, chromatography, or other related processing steps in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques or experience with spectroscopic instrumentation.
  • Understanding of process modeling, scale-up principles, or statistical analysis is a plus.
