The CTICU is an 8-bed intensive care unit specializing in cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular interventions and vascular surgery. We are a growing program, seeing new procedures and admitting upwards of 250 plus open heart surgery patients a year. Devices commonly utilized in this unit are IABP, Impella, EKOs, transvenous pacemakers and swan-ganz catheters. The unit is supported by Dr. El-Khatib, our primary cardiothoracic surgeon, 24/7 intensivists, and a team of interventional cardiologists. Our care is patient centered and our processes are nurse-driven. The multidisciplinary approach is vital to quality patient care with daily nurse-led patient rounds. Our ability to serve as a transitional care unit with our open heart surgery patients increases our patient satisfaction. Our CTICU is a two-time Bronze Beacon Award Unit. The ICU is a 20-bed unit compiled of a wide range of diversity and patient demographics. The skill set required to function on our unit is broad and challenging. Our patient population includes patients from the following service lines: trauma both levels I and II along with the only OB trauma service in the area, neurology with being a Stroke Center and the addition of three neurosurgeons, cardiothoracic with an open heart program and interventional cardiology program, and critically ill medical and surgical patients. Teamwork is critical to our functionality and positive outcomes for our patients. The unit is nurse-driven in the decision making processes that occur and we are staffed by a 24/7 intensivist and trauma surgeon that value the opinions and input of the nursing staff. The interdisciplinary approach is vital to the patient experience and teams collaborate across every department. The management is present within the department and supportive of professional development and career goals through shared governance.

GENERAL OVERVIEW:
The Registered Nurse assesses human responses and plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for individuals or families for whom the nurse is responsible.
