Job Description

San Bernardino Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly adjunct positions for our two college campuses (San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College) on a continuous basis. However, this does not imply the department is actively recruiting for this position. The Head Coach and/or Athletic Director will determine amount of coaching stipend for Assistant Coach assignment, not to exceed 7,000.
This posting is to establish a pool of qualified applicants' positions as Adjunct Head Coach, Women's Track & Field.

Representative Duties:

  1. Responsible for management of all phases of the men's track & field program which includes recruiting, training, practicing, competition, scheduling, game-day preparation, fundraising, travel and adhering to and enforcement of all policies and procedures of the CCCAA, PCAC and the SBCCD.
  2. Provide leadership and instruction in the academic, athletic and personal development of the student athlete.
  3. Promote the academic progress of the student athlete by working closely with the counseling staff.
  4. Work collaboratively with in selection, purchase, and maintenance of the team equipment and supplies.
  5. Support the sports medicine staff to ensure student athletes welfare.
  6. Provide daily direction to assistant coaches and promote and atmosphere of compliance.
  7. Assist athletes in academic and athletic preparation for transfer to four-year universities.
  8. Promote San Bernardino Valley College athletics in the community and develop and maintain a close working professional relationship with local high school coaches.
  9. Help resolve student-athlete issues including providing encouragement and support for student athletes
  10. Assist with sports clinics, camps, tournaments, races and/or charity games.
  11. Coach practices and both traditional and non-traditional games.
  12. Attend and participate in some local coaches' meetings, staff and conference meetings, state coaches' meetings, and coaching clinics; maintain membership and participate in meetings at the local and state coaches' associations.
  13. Provide the Sports Information Specialist the statistics for all tournaments and other off site contests as needed.
  14. Give input on the performance of each referee after each game for the referee evaluation as needed.
  15. Provide the necessary documentation for the reimbursement of out- of- pocket expenses.
  16. Maintain office hours and participate in department/division meetings.


Qualifications

Education :

Any bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six (6) years of professional experience.

A minimum of two years of experience coaching high school and/or college age T rack & Field as part of a club or team.

Demonstrated sensitivity to, understanding of, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, religious, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Function / Position Summary

The head coach is expected to provide the necessary leadership and to plan, organize, and be responsible for a comprehensive interscholastic program, and to carry out the objectives of the total school athletic program.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • The Head Varsity Coach is responsible for all levels of the program.
  • Direct and leads a coaching staff- Monitor assignments and duties of assistant and lower level coaches and annually evaluate all coaches.

  • Coordinate pre-season parent meetings for all levels of sport to review scholastic eligibility requirements, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and inherent risks of the sport.
  • Work effectively with the athletic office to manage and coordinate practice and competition schedules throughout the off-season, summer, and in-season periods.
  • Responsible for submissions of requests to purchase equipment, supplies and uniforms as needed, to the Athletic Director.
  • Assume and maintain responsibility for inventory, selection and care of equipment.
  • Maintain effective communication and cooperative working relationships with athletes, school administration, staff, students, parents and the community.
  • Maintain good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, local youth programs, etc.
  • Work effectively with student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Models and instills the values of sportsmanship and fair play to all participants
  • Monitor students' athletic and academic eligibility. Inform parents and student/athletes regarding NCAA clearinghouse registration deadlines and academic requirements, etc.
  • Encourage athletes to sign-up for Honest Game (or similar NCAA tracking system) and work with them to prepare for college.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Plan, organize, and implement safe and effective daily practices and other planned events.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the U-46 Athletic Code of Conduct and U-46 Student Code of Conduct.
  • Build and sustain a competitive program that is widely supported and respected by the high school staff and community at large.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director for all fundraising activities and maintain accurate records of monies collected and deposited in compliance with District policy and procedures.
  • Provide game results to the media; keep season and game-by-game statistics and records; provide statistical reports to the Athletic Director as needed and/or requested.
  • Facilitate the long-term success and viability of the program by establishing positive relationships with local athletics organizations and K-8 sports programs.
  • Attendance at Freshman Orientation, incoming 8th Grade Night, and other related activity as applicable.
  • Submit a written annual end of season program evaluation with recommendations for improvements to the Athletic Director.
  • Engages in personal professional development activities.
  • Other duties/events as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Education
  • Proper certification with American Sport Education Program and/or Valid Illinois Teaching certificate.
  • Pass IHSA required tests and view videos.
  • Required - Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

Experience / Knowledge
  • Head Varsity Coaching experience or professional coaching/player level equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to handle and react professionally to stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated positive conduct and adherence to disciplinary guidelines in previous coaching positions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high school athletes.
  • Requires a proven verifiable record of placing appropriate emphasis on good sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.

Physical Demands
  • This work involves standing for long periods of time and may involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, manual dexterity to operate sports related equipment, and handles and works with various materials/objects.
  • Able to work in a wide variety of temperatures and weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors; including extreme high temperature conditions outdoors.
  • Able to lift equipment up to 50 pounds

  • Terms of employment are determined by IHSA approved athletic calendar and school district policy.
  • Sport Season-Per IHSA Calendar
  • Student opportunities will either remain the same, not be offered, or require modification to adjust to environmental restrictions. Positions and stipends will also be adjusted to reflect these changes.
  • For ETA coaches: If satisfactory status is maintained, the position can be renewed without reapplying.
  • For Non-ETA Coaches: this position is a one-year position. Must reapply each year.

  • This is an Appendix F stipend position in accordance with the school year calendar.
