Responsibilities

HOUSEKEEPING FUNCTIONS:

Promptly responds to room turnover requests.

Assists in the turnover of the operating room for surgery, including obtaining supplies and equipment, and returning equipment and unused supplies at conclusion of the procedure.

Surface disinfection of specialty OR equipment, including robot, microscopes, etc.

Assists in obtaining and stocking equipment for subsequent cases.

Assists with transport and breakdown of case cart to decontamination as needed.

SUPPLY INVENTORY FUNCTIONS:

Checks and re-stocks the following areas to maintain adequate inventory levels: core areas, distribution cart, general department inventory, and air tanks.

GENERAL/MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS:

Assists with patient transport, transfer and positioning as needed within the OR.

Performs or assists with surgical site preparation as requested, including pre-operative shave preps.

Assists room personnel with patient preparations and positioning as needed (e.g., holding limbs).

Maintains clear and uncluttered hallways.

Responds to room requests and special needs.

Transports equipment, blood, specimens, lab draws and other items to and from the OR to other hospital departments.

May transport patients and retrieve beds and stretchers as needed within the perioperative areas.

Completes assigned duties checklist and provides report to lead or relief personnel.

Demonstrates accepted aseptic practices in the performance of all job duties.

Adheres to all Legacy and departmental policies and procedures.



Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:

One year previous medical experience in an acute care setting preferred. This could include experience as a Surgical Services Aide, OR Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, central sterile tech, or other medical experience.

Skills:

Must have the ability to give and receive verbal and written instructions in English and perform basic computations. Medical terminology desirable.

Must be able to work well with other team members.  

Must be able to perform duties independently with minimal supervision.

Must be able to quickly perform a variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Must be willing and able to work alternate shifts (including weekends) and overtime to meet the demands and needs of patient care and the department.

Summary:
The purpose of the Operating Room Assistant is to perform service functions that support the delivery of patient care in the Operating Room. 4. *Cleaning Between Cases:*
� Efficiently clean and disinfect the operating room surfaces, equipment, and instruments between surgical cases to ensure a sterile environment.
� Thoroughly clean all areas of the OR, including operating tables, lights, and other surfaces.
� Ensure all waste, including biohazardous materials, is disposed of per hospital protocols.
5. *Specimen Management:*
� Properly handle, and verify documented surgical specimens collected during procedures.
� Ensure specimens are sent to the appropriate laboratory for analysis and maintain chain-of-custody documentation.
6. *Equipment Management:*
� Ensure that all surgical equipment is appropriately cleaned and stored after each use.
� Regularly inspect equipment for functionality and report any malfunctions or required repairs to appropriate personnel.
7. *Education and Training:*
� Stay updated on industry best practices and hospital policies related to operating room procedures and participate in ongoing training and education to enhance skills and knowledge.

General Summary

  • Cleans, distributes and or delivers equipment to the Operating Rooms on a regular basis.
  • Checks equipment, supplies and accessories on a regular basis.

  • Sets up and removes equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is functioning properly and stored appropriately.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.

Job Description

Performs various duties to assist the Surgical Suite Team in the treatment and care of Peri-Operative Patients in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Description:

  • Assists members of the Surgical Suite Team in maintaining the operative schedule by transporting patients from patient areas, to and from the Operating Room. Areas include, but are not limited to, SDC, Post-Op, Inpatient Floors, and the Emergency Room.

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of all OR beds, tables, and attachments.

  • Ensures proper working conditions of equipment prior to patient care. Securely tighten and/or lock beds, attachments, and headpieces, prior to patient care and transferring patients.

  • Delivers and returns appropriate equipment to each operating room, to include but not limited to, stirrups, suction machines, towers, step stools, positioning aides with D&C machine and TPS consoles.

  • Assists in the care, handling, and delivering to and from the Operating Rooms of delicate, sophisticated, expensive equipment such as microscopes and specialty equipment.

  • Cleans all equipment and cords prior to returning to designated locations.

  • Changes linens on patient beds and stretchers to have the patient beds ready for patient transfer prior to the completion of the surgical case.

  • Verifies all oxygen tanks are full and on stretcher at time of transfer.

  • Maintains patient safety by ensuring that beds and stretchers remained locked during patient transfer and bed rails are up at all times.

  • Adheres to safety blood/body fluid policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of Infection Prevention Standards and cleaning with regards to patient and staff safety.

  • Wears appropriate personal protective attire for task being performed.

  • Assists with room cleaning and turnover as assigned or directed.

  • Demonstrates and adhere to the proper sequence and cleaning procedures to be carried out between surgical cases.

  • Assists with patient positioning, lifting and transfer. May assist with skin prep by elevating upper or lower extremities under direction of the Registered Nurse.

  • Restocks and maintains sub sterile rooms, utility rooms, equipment rooms and supply areas.

  • Demonstrates initiative to keep these areas clean, orderly and free from trash and clutter.

  • Assists RN in restocking OR room cabinets per par levels.

  • Works effectively with other staff as a member of the surgical team.

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize task according to urgency.

  • Exhibits ability to multitask.

  • Assists in orientation of other personnel to the department under the direction of the supervisor or Registered Nurse.

Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • One year experience as a Nursing Assistant II (NAII) or nursing assistant or one year experience in a position in an Operating Room/Post Anesthesia Care Unit area. Comprehensive knowledge of aseptic technique and principles preferred.
  • Able to function independently in a high stress, fast paced, critical care area.
  • Must be able to assist with lifting patients, moving equipment, and disposing of trash and linens.

Schedule Details:40 hrs per week, 8 hr Shifts, Rot. Days/Eves, 3p-11p, may rotate 6a-2p, 7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-5p, Rot. weekends, 7a-3p. Rot. Holidays 7a-3p
