Overview

Full-time structural engineer position focused on commercial, industrial, healthcare, government, and education projects with emphasis on commercial clients.

• Design projects as a structural engineer for commercial, industrial, healthcare, government, and education projects of various sizes with the main focus on commercial projects. Work with experienced engineers and technicians while coordinating work within multi-discipline teams. The majority of efforts will focus on commercial clients who we work with locally and nationally.
• Lead the structural design portion of small to medium sized projects, make design recommendations and decisions, and work with a senior engineer to oversee the completion and quality of construction drawings, specifications, reports, and other project documentation.
• Oversee shop drawing reviews and field data collection; manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Collaborate with other disciplines and contribute to team efforts to create better solutions and better projects.
• Provide design solutions and communicate effectively with Owners; present design concepts clearly in writing and verbally.

• Professional Engineer licensure in Illinois or Indiana or the ability for immediate licensure in Illinois and Indiana.
• Structural design experience using concrete, steel, and masonry. Wood design is a plus.
• Willingness to travel short distances to job sites to evaluate existing buildings or observe current projects under construction.
• Experience and willingness to collaborate with other disciplines.
• Ability to manage time and workload effectively, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
• Capable of delegating minor work to younger engineers or designers.
• Excellent attention to detail; strong oral and written communication skills.
• Experience using Revit, 3D software (Navisworks/Recap), structural engineering design software, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
• Must have or be able to obtain licensure in a timely manner as required by project needs.

Your Role at BSI A key member of our Civil/Structural team, the Structural Engineer possesses strong knowledge of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design in industrial settings. They perform necessary calculations and ensure that the structural scope of our design packages follows client and industry standards. The ideal candidate works well in a team environment, has experience working with multi-discipline teams, and strives to provide quality designs to our clients.

• Gathers field data and inspects sites and structures to evaluate existing conditions when necessary
• With minimal supervision, performs and ensures all calculations and design efforts to prepare deliverables
• Ensures structural design is accurate and coordinated within the model and drawings
• Coordinates and communicates with designers on projects and establishes clear direction
• Writes project-based documents including, but not limited to: studies, project notes, scope, close-out reports
• Selects appropriate construction materials
• Obtains plans and building regulation approvals
• Coordinates with outside consultants and contractors when required (geotechnical engineers, construction contractors, etc.)
• Participates in construction support, startup, and commissioning efforts
• Follows the BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards, ensuring quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables
• Establishes and manages their own engineering schedule and budget objectives on assigned projects
• Signs off on drawing packages if PE License is obtained

• 3+ years of experience in a Structural Engineering role designing structures in steel, concrete, masonry, and/or wood
• Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering or related field
• Skilled with Risa-3D
• Familiar with necessary codes, including but not limited to: IBC, ASCE, ACI 318, AISC, and NDS
• Competent in selecting construction materials, construction methods, and industry standards
• Strong structural analysis experience, including 3D and solid finite element modeling
• PE License preferred, not required

Job Description:

General Summary:

The Structural Engineer, with supervision from the Manager of Structural Engineering or Project Engineer, will provide the technical, organizational and communication skills to produce well-designed and coordinated construction documents for structural systems.

Essential Job Functions:

• Keep current with latest code publications and apply in everyday analysis as applicable

• Formulate design and/or analysis of structural framing systems and perform necessary calculations

• Perform basic engineering analysis including lateral design with limited guidance.

• Conduct field measuring and checking at construction site to verify existing conditions

• Ability to prepare construction documents including drawings and specifications to comply with company standards.

• Communicate with other disciplines to produce well-coordinated construction documents

• Review shop drawing submittals to assure design intent is met

• Maintain project file containing project calculations, correspondence, appropriate reference material, etc.

• Communicate scope changes to Manager of Structural Engineering and Project Manager

• Use available structural computer programs to enhance productivity and verifies results with manual checks

• Act as a positive representative of the company and its core values

• Assist interns with day-to-day tasks.
