Upon the order of a qualified physician, the Mammography Technologist will utilize equipment which produces ionizing radiation to obtain images for diagnostic purposes according to policies, procedures, and protocols of the KSC Radiology Department and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. The Mammography Technologist will perform Mammography and DEXA studies, in addition to general radiographic studies, 
fluoroscopic studies, ASC procedures, and/or SCNB procedures. The Mammography Technologist will utilize the designated Radiology Information System (RIS) and designated PACS system. May be assigned to other duties, technical or non-technical if training, experience, and credentials are deemed adequate by supervisor to perform those duties.

Required Qualifications:



  • High School diploma or GED. Graduate of an approved Radiologic Technology program

  • 40 hours mammography training approved by the ARRT to meet the minimum initial FDA & TMB requirements for mammographers

  • ARRT (R)(M) MRT-General Certificate

  • BLS through American Heart Associaion

  • 2+years of experience in mammography or 1+ years of KSC experience

  • X-ray and/or SCNB experience

  • Experience using Microsoft

  • PACS and RIS experience

  • Working knowledge of mammography quality assurance measures and accreditation requirements

Essential Duties:



  • Upon the order of a qualified physician, performs diagnostic and/or screening mammography and DEXA procedures, to include general radiographic studies, fluoroscopic studies, ASC procedures, and/or SCNB procedures if applicable, according to policies, procedures, and protocols of the KSC radiology department. Understands and applies technical principles affecting optimal production of radiographic images, as well as anatomical orientations and anomalies affecting proper positioning. Understands age related communication needs of patients and is able to effectively convey instructions. Maintains an individual repeat rate of <5% in Mammography and <8% in Radiography

  • Participates in Technical Quality Control measures which include performance of routine equipment maintenance and reporting malfunctions or variances of performance of all equipment to the appropriate supervisor or his/her designee in the supervisor’s absence. Able to perform mammography quality control tests, determine compliance with established standards and document results, instituting corrective action and/or suspend performing studies if necessary to maintain compliance with established standards. Maintains required documentation of quality assurance activities. Should be familiar with service arrangements for equipment. Maintains necessary supplies and documentation of cleaning logs as applicable

  • Uses RIS system correctly, according to Clinic and Department guidelines and properly documents, for the radiologist’s review, atypical conditions which could affect image quality. Understands PACS system and can identify problems with image transmission as they occur and notify Medical Imaging Supervisor or Lead/designee when corrective actions are beyond the scope of the technologist

  • Conscious of radiation safety measures and demonstrates competence in the selection and use of shielding devices as is age appropriate for the patient or as requested when study content will not be compromised.  Utilizes sterile technique when applicable for invasive procedures

  • Participates in formal and in service training programs of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, department specific in services, and any applicable site-specific training. Maintains current applicable licenses and/or certifications and complies with continuing education requirements necessary to maintain same

  • Interacts effectively with patients and coworkers, including staff assigned to other locations. Communicates readily and well with Supervisor, Lead, peers, and Radiologists in giving and receiving feedback. Must have the ability to understand and respond to questions by giving information Capable of dealing effectively with other clinic departments, physicians, and staff. The Radiology Technologist will utilize the designated Radiology Information System (RIS) to complete clerical processes and the designated Patient Archiving System (PACS).

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • One (1) of the following required:

  • Graduate of an academic program of health sciences or invasive cardiovascular technology; or

  • Graduate of an accredited school of vocational nursing; or

  • If employee has been credentialed as an RCIS by the CCI since 2013 or earlier, formal education is not required

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certified in Basic or Advanced Life Support and one (1) of the following required:

  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) by Cardiovascular Credentialing International; or

  • Registered Radiological Technologist in Cardiovascular-Interventional Technology (ARRT-CV) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; or

  • Licensed Vocational Nurse by the State of Texas

Experience/ Knowledge/ Skills:

  • Four (4) years of prior experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Lab, required

  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver patients in conjunction with others in order to perform job functions

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides technical support to physicians during catheterization procedures as a scrub technician, charter or driver, providing physician with handling of sterile equipment
  • Records all types of cardiovascular procedures; performs physiologic monitoring of patients during procedures interpreting ECG patterns and dysrhythmias;
  • Analyzes arterial and venous blood gas and respired gas samples through the operation of automatic analyzing equipment to determine patient’s cardiac output, metabolic state and oxygen saturation.
  • Enters patient data in computer for patient record at a competent level and according to the age/needs of the patient/population served.
  • Operates recording and imaging equipment, as required, and maintains quality control of hemodynamic equipment and film processing equipment. Identifies and helps resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Demonstrates excellent technical skills. Acts as a resource and mentor to staff and less experienced technologists. Introduces and demonstrates new techniques to the other technologists.
  • Maintains safety, environmental, and infection control procedures for the department.
  • Functions as a liaison between physicians, technologists and department support staff.
  • Helps schedule technologists to ensure appropriate staffing for expected patient volumes
  • Intervenes to help solve issues and complaints
  • Identifies areas of opportunity within department and makes recommendations for quality and/or process improvement.
