About This Role:

Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Computer Science Engineer Intern to support the development, integration, and optimization of manufacturing automation
systems and production data tools in a Class II medical device production environment.

This internship offers hands-on experience applying software development, controls integration, and data analytics to real-world manufacturing processes in a regulated
industry compliant with FDA QSR (21 CFR Part 820), ISO 13485, and data integrity standards.

This internship is a 6-month term position with flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments and may be either part-time or full-time.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and optimization of automation control software for production equipment and systems.

  • Support integration of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), sensors, and actuators into manufacturing processes.

  • Help design and implement real-time data collection and monitoring systems to improve process control and visibility.

  • Develop scripts, tools, or dashboards to track production performance, equipment status, and quality metrics.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to link automation hardware with software solutions for improved efficiency and repeatability.

  • Participate in equipment qualification and software validation for automated systems.

  • Maintain and update automation documentation, including source code records, change logs, and validation evidence.

  • Follow Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and maintain compliance with environmental health and safety (EHS) requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language relevant to automation (e.g., Python, C/C++, C#, or ladder logic).

  • Familiarity with industrial automation concepts and basic controls theory.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a cross-functional engineering team.

Preferred:

  • Exposure to PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).

  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, OPC UA).

  • Experience with data visualization or SCADA/HMI development.

  • Understanding of automation system validation in regulated environments.

  • Hands-on experience with sensors, motion control, or robotics in a lab or project setting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the 6-month internship, the student will have gained:

  • Practical experience in manufacturing automation development and integration for medical devices.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in both office and controlled manufacturing areas.

  • Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on the production floor.

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs and spend time on the manufacturing floor during equipment setup, testing, and troubleshooting.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in the analysis, design, and testing of embedded software

  • 3+ years of experience with reverse engineering tools

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architecture, including ARM or RISCV, and assembly language programming

  • Knowledge of electronic circuit design and PCB layout

  • Knowledge of physical interfaces used for inter-IC communication

  • Ability to program with Python, C, and C++ programming language

  • Ability to prepare written documents, including reports, test plans, design specifications, requirements documents, and training materials

  • Ability to brief and present findings to clients, customers, and external partners, interact with client engineers, and respond to technical questions and requests from customers

**CACI is seeking a Computer Engineer who is willing to work onsite in Dahlgren, Virginia. Applicants with current/active Secret-level clearance highly desired!**
**Responsibilities:**
+ Design new rack-level computing systems for Surface Navy, including compute, network, storage, and display systems.
**Create design documentation for new computing systems, including:**
+ Design documents, including wiring diagrams port allocations and bills of material.
+ Ship integration information, including I/O tables for Technical Data packages.
+ Production information, including bill of material part numbers and quantities.
+ Provide alternatives for items in deployed systems that are no longer procurable.
+ Review and assess alternatives defined by Life Cycle Engineering Agent, Combat System Engineering Agent and production team.
+ Apply technology roadmaps to tactical computing equipment to aid customer in defining path forward.
+ Create and update Visio drawings including cabinet elevations, wiring diagrams, power wiring diagrams.
+ Provide feedback on fiber optic cable plants.
+ Perform trade studies and analysis of alternatives for equipment upgrades of tactical computing systems.
+ Provide summaries of roadmaps for Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, networking, and storage.
+ Compare and contrast various motherboard designs.
+ Assess pros and cons of the products of various server vendors.
+ Assess suitability of various motherboard designs to various Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) architectures.
**Qualifications:**
_Required:_
+ BS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering discipline and 0-3 years experience required.
+ Proficiency with Visio or equivalent drawing tools
+ Proficiency with Excel and Visual Basic
+ Working knowledge of server and switch hardware.
+ Working knowledge of thin clients/zero clients
+ Working knowledge of fiber optic communication types and compatibilities
+ Need to have the ability to obtain and maintain, at minimum, a Secret Level Security Clearance. Active Secret Security Clearance is a plus.
+ **Must be a U.S. citizen.** **_(US Citizenship is required in order to obtain a security clearance from the DoD.)_**
