Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Quarry Supervisor and Quarry Manager in technical support of the operation
- Assist in performing mine engineering and mine planning activities to include the following:
- Develop short-range 30/60/90-day Drill & Blast scheduling plans
- Design Drill & Blast patterns and upload to Drill GPS systems
- Perform surveying as required with varying survey equipment e.g. GPS, drone, total station
- Produce blast hole drill assay maps
- Perform Block Model reconciliation from blast hole drill assay rock quality information
- Work with Corporate Mine Engineers to develop and annually revise the one, five, and life of mine plans by using Surpac and MineSched mining softwares
- Learn and administer all company policies and safety procedures to maintain and promote a safe workplace
- Develop an understanding of the cement and aggregate manufacturing process to improve efficient mining methods; also understand changes to the plant’s manufacturing chemistry and how it impacts the mineral requirements and reserves
- Interface with, and assist plant, corporate personnel, and contractors as required
- Work with the environmental division to mining operations compliance with local and federal agencies
- Operate as a commercial drone pilot operate remote drones for aerial survey work
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field preferred; degrees such as a degree in Civil Engineering or Geosciences may be acceptable depending on work experience.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Must have or willing to acquire FAA Part 107 sUAS drone pilot certification
- Surveying knowledge preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Highly organized self-starter with an eye for detail and able to maintain multiple on-going projects simultaneously
- Flexible attitude with ability to work well in ambiguous, changing situations and able to reprioritize work accordingly
- Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate positive working relationships with all levels of management and staff
- Able to exercise sound judgment in problem-solving
- Physical requirements: able to walk/hike long distances, stoop, crawl under and into enclosed spaces, and climb on equipment to provide supervision during work

Position Overview:
We have an excellent opportunity for a Mining Engineer to join our Roanoke Cement team. This exempt position will report to the Quarry Manager and will be responsible for providing technical support and engineering assistance to the quarry.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
* Assist the quarry manager with daily operations in the quarry; act as quarry supervisor in the absence of the quarry manager and oversee crew activities and ensure everyone is working safely. When needed, perform pre-shift work place exams and safety task assignment for quarry crew.
* Oversee and administer contractors in the quarry including drilling & blasting and stripping contractors. Ensure contractors work safely and stay on task and review all completed work and invoices.
* Develop mine plans to deliver raw materials for the cement plant that meet set quality standards. Work with the quarry manager to ensure the mine plans are followed to avoid any disruptions to the cement plant and adjust accordingly as needed.
* Perform mine surveying, including blast hole sampling and hole location survey along with aerial surveys utilizing UAVs. Must be able to obtain FAA Part 107 Certification as a Remote Pilot.
* Track and report daily production and heavy mobile equipment fleet utilization and reliability. Track major repairs to mobile equipment and work with mobile maintenance to schedule major repairs and preventive maintenance for the fleet.
* Support Quarry Manager in creating capital plans and writing capital spend requests and manage approved projects.
* Support Quarry Manager in monitoring and controlling costs, creating monthly reports, and contribute to creating annual budgets.
* Ensure quarry operations comply with all environmental permits and reporting requirements.
* Demonstrate and foster a sense of urgency and strong commitment to achieve goals.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Skills:
* B.Sc. degree in Mining or Civil Engineering is required.
* 1-3 years' experience as an engineer in the mining industry.
* Currently hold a Virginia DMME Surface Foreman Certification or be qualified to apply for certification within 6 months of hire.
* Currently hold FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification or be able to obtain certification upon hire.
* Competent in computer aided design packages such as Autocad or mine planning software programs such as Maptek Vulcan.
* Familiar with MSHA regulations to ensure mining operations are safe and compliant with applicable laws.
* Knowledge of cement manufacturing a plus.
* Knowledge of mining mobile equipment and maintenance tracking.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Geology & Mining Manager, this role will be responsible for the safe execution of the mine plans and mine operations while providing ore control and tonnage requirements for the Plant. Support or direct daily Lucerne Valley quarry operations to meet required specifications for plant feed stone; ensure safety, environmental and regulatory compliance and support economic and sustainable development of the mineral resources.
Support or manage budgeted OPEX costs, monthly reporting, CAPEX projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support or manage quarry operations to ensure that quarry development plans are being followed, feed stone requirements are being met, and quarry permit conditions and other government regulations are being followed.
- Support or manage Amboy quarry mining campaigns as required.
- Interact with plant staff and review quality control data as it relates to feed stone selection and blending, ore processing, and maintenance of consistent feed stone to the plant.
- Lead the promotion of safety awareness and MSHA compliance.
- Assure proper blasting, mining and mobile equipment activities are managed to best practice. Work to achieve optimized and efficient mining production.
- Monitor and track quarry production and development volumes.
- Support quarry budgeting activities for OPEX and CAPEX spending and reporting.
- Prepare annual mine plans and monthly extraction charts, from 5 year mine plans to provide the budgeted ore quality and tons to the plant. Coordinate and support Regional Technical Services on mine planning projects.
- Maintain and update quarry production and development maps and cross-sections for economic quarry planning.
- Support mine planning with updates of geologic models and mine plans.
- Manage and conduct year-end and mid-year stockpile inventories (or as needed by accounting department.)
