Key Responsibilities

Academic Support

Qualifications

Job Overview:

The Part-Time Guidance Counselor at Jazz Hands Musicians Conservatory will meet weekly with students to assess their class and program progress, ensure they remain on track to matriculate through the program, and provide support in completing necessary forms. The counselor will play a pivotal role in helping students stay accountable and achieve their educational and personal development goals.

Job Responsibilities & Duties:

Student Meetings:

Conduct weekly one-on-one meetings with students with autism to discuss their progress in classes and the program and provide personalized guidance and assistance throughout the class registration process, understanding and addressing their unique needs. Offer support and reassurance to help them navigate through course options and make informed decisions

Identify any academic, social, or personal challenges (relating to their learning) students may and develop strategies have to address them.

Progress Tracking:

Monitor student progress through the programs and classes of Enrichment 2 and the Conservatory.

Maintain detailed records of each student’s progress, challenges, and achievements in the student progress document.

Provide regular updates to the Program Director and instructional faculty regarding student progress.

Interpret assessments to help students understand their strengths, interests, and areas for improvement (including diagnostic assessment and some Moodle assessment, as applicable).

Use assessment results to inform individualized support plans (student progress document).

Support and Accountability:

Work closely with students, parents and/or support staff, program director and instructors to ensure students with autism receive individualized guidance regarding their course selection and registration. Develop personalized academic plans, considering their unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles.

Assist students in completing necessary forms and paperwork for program requirements (ex. application for Jazz Hands Jobs, helping students schedule their jury, etc).

Help students set realistic goals and create action plans to achieve them.

Hold students accountable for meeting their goals and completing their coursework.

Help interested students prepare necessary skills needed to be eligible for the Jazz Hands Jobs Program

Collaborate with instructional faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to student development.

Communicate with parents/guardians and/ or student at home support staff as necessary to discuss student progress and address any concerns.

Organize and facilitate workshops or group sessions on relevant topics (e.g., time management, study skills, personal development), as applicable.

Program Development:

Provide feedback to the Program Director and instructional faculty on potential improvements to the curriculum and student support services using the SIPFAST Form.

Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in guidance counseling and neurodiversity support.

Crisis Intervention:

Provide immediate support and intervention (or refer students to appropriate entities) in situations where students are experiencing emotional or psychological crises.

Coordinate with students’ mental health professionals and other relevant parties if necessary and applicable for students’ learning progress and growth.

Training

Collaborate with executive team to ensure that you receive the appropriate training

Reporting:

Qualifications & Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Valid counseling certification or license as applicable

Experience working with neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with autism.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and staff.

Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Knowledge of educational and vocational pathways for musicians is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

Familiarity with music education and the unique needs of student musicians.

Qualifications & Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Valid counseling certification or license as applicable

Experience working with neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with autism.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, and staff.

Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Knowledge of educational and vocational pathways for musicians is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

Familiarity with music education and the unique needs of student musicians.

Experience in creating and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs).

Training in neurodiversity and inclusive education practices.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR POSITION

The guidance counselor works with pupils, teachers and parents, emphasizing the developmental needs of all students through counseling, consultation and coordination.
The guidance counselor reports directly to the building principal. Certification in guidance counseling from the Department of Education is required for the position.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides counseling and guidance to students individually:

a. Helps students resolve and/or deal with personal problems that arise in dealing with peers, family, school, and other situations causing stress.

b. Helps students become adequate and responsible in their own choices and decision

making.

c. Helping students discover themselves as worth-while people, developing

understanding and acceptance of themselves and others.

d. Allows individuals (students, parents, teachers) to discuss problems or concerns

with a professional counselor who will listen carefully, discuss available options,

keeps confidence and neither judges nor stops approving of him/her as a person.

e. Assists students in fulfilling their educational requirements and needs by observing

their academic growth.

f. Evaluates records of all new students for placement.

g. Periodically summarizes progress of counseling in guidance records.

2. Provides group guidance:

a. To work with special needs groups to supplement individual counseling and to focus on common issues and needs.

b. To provide whole class guidance as time permits with needs determined by counselor, class, teacher, and/or principal.

c. To facilitate effective education and vocational exploration within the classroom as time permits. This may be actually provided for by counselor, teacher or other qualified person.

d. Family counseling as time and need allow.

e. Adolescent Health- education program - teaching, discussing issues dealing with

puberty ( grades 4-6 girls) and ( grades 5-6 boys) and adolescence.

3. Consultation:

A. Provides services to school staff.

1. Consults with teachers / administration about specific students.

2. Work to enhance or help set-up behavior management programs.

3. Consultant to teachers.

4. Active consultant to Pupil Placement Team.

5. Resource person for teachers / administration especially in areas of adjustment

problems and child developmental needs.

6. Consult with outside agencies such as child and Family Services, Welfare Dept.,

Juvenile Officer, school psychologists, social workers, staff and other schools

and programs (ex. TAC).

B. Resource to parents/families

1. Directly contacts and /or responds to parents to discuss personal adjustments and

areas of concern.

2. Interprets previous grades and tests as needed.

3. Discusses discipline cases.

4. Makes appropriate referrals and recommendations.

C. Consults with other counselors

1. Discuss common concerns.

2. Evaluate needs.

3. Strives to improve and maintain professional competence.

D. Consults and works closely with school nurses.

4. Coordination

A. Evaluates records of new students to pick up special needs areas and/or for

placement.

B. Assists students in fulfilling their educational requirements and needs by observing

academic growth through test results and teacher/parent /student consultation and

coordination.

C. Makes appropriate referrals for special testing.

D. Coordinates services with other counselors, students, parents, teachers, and others

as needs arise.

E. Set-up, coordinate and supervise counselor intern program for maximum program

effectiveness.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The term of the contract will be for 200 days or in accordance with current master agreement. Each guidance counselor will be evaluated on an annual basis by April 1. Evaluations will be completed by the building principal.

JOB GOAL:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct assistance to students

1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the use of teacher comments, interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data. Works with students in evolving educational and career plans in terms of such evaluation.

2. Provides information and prepares recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships, as well as to potential employers and other agencies.

3. Maintains a close relationship with the child study team following directives and recommendations as needed.

4. Registers students new to the school, provides orientation and information relative to school procedures, curriculum and extracurricular opportunities.

5. Arranges for summer work and/or enrollment in summer school programs to make up noted deficiencies.

6. Provides for a smooth transition from elementary school to high school/middle school, which may include orientation programs for students and parents.

Transition to College and Career

1. Works closely with and involves parents in planning students' career plans, and assists in the resolution of school-related problems.

2. Assists in the organization and administration of standardized test programs. Provides timely notice and information to students and parents of opportunities to take SAT, ACT and AP exams.

3. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school, and assists those that do in finding alternative educational programs and/or employment.

Office Management

1. Maintains a professional office environment.

2. When a co-worker is unavailable, whenever possible provides interim assistance to students or parents with urgent needs.

3. Maintains student records and ensures their confidentiality.

4. Works closely with teachers, administrators and other professional staff members, providing information and assistance where needed for the ultimate benefit of students.

5. Gathers information on colleges and careers. Keeps this information accessible to students and parents in an organized arrangement.

6. Deals with confusion and emergencies in a friendly, supportive, calm manner. Assists agitated or confused students in re-composing themselves during situations where the student has a problem or personal setback.

7. Notifies students of upcoming opportunities to meet with college recruiters, job fairs, and outside career counselors.

Program Evaluation

1. Assists in the evaluation of current curriculum offerings and in the planning, selection and implementation of new course offerings.

2. Participates in follow-up studies of former students for the purpose of improving services and evaluating the effectiveness of the educational program being offered by the school.

3. Uses the internet to gather current information about colleges and career programs. Compares on-line and published information with first-hand accounts from returning graduates in order to gain a full, perspective of the actual situation, rather than relying on outdated impressions.

4. Retains essential information for parents and students such as college graduation rates.

5. Shares research and findings with colleagues and students in order to improve counseling services.
