Overview

The Academic Advisor or Academic Advisor Senior will advise for the Biology programs within the College of Arts and Sciences. The position will help build a total ArtSci experience, including the development of a culture of empowering student success, engagement through inside and outside-the-classroom opportunities, and the transition to meaningful careers. The selected candidate will work closely with the Biology Department and its programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with creating and managing a program of study that maximizes their 1) potential for success while in school, 2) timely graduation, and 3) opportunities to reach academic and career goals after graduation. 
  • Provide students with correct up-to-date academic information about university graduation requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

The position will be filled at either an Academic Advisor or Academic Advisor Senior level based upon qualifications and assigned duties:

  • For Academic Advisor - Bachelor's degree is required.
  • For Academic Advisor Senior - Bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant experience is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational background in the life sciences or experience or educational background in education or counseling. Understanding of developmental academic advising processes. 
  • Experience with the software programs DegreeWorks, Banner, and/or Aggie Handshake. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of student development and the ability to serve and assist the students in developing effective academic plans and career and life goals in order to promote student retention and academic success. 
  • Knowledge of student advising and graduation requirements for academic degrees, and the ability to anticipate department and/or student needs. 
  • Ability to creatively and independently problem-solve by prioritizing and multitasking while under pressure. 
  • Ability to serve individuals with diverse personalities through the use of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Ability to understand and form a commitment to USU's mission, strategic initiatives, and communities of engaged learners. 
  • Knowledge of university course schedules and degree requirements. 
  • Knowledge of student advisement methods and techniques (monitoring students' classes, scheduling, academic progress, and registration). 
  • Ability to keep student information confidential and abide by FERPA laws. 
  • Ability to always maintain professionalism even in high stress situations. 
  • Understanding of, or ability to learn University IT systems including DegreeWorks, Banner, Aggie Handshake, and other academic and office productivity software. 
  • Ability to work on one's own with minimal supervision.

  • This position is actively involved in intentional, proactive contacts and interventions with students to facilitate student success and completion. Contacts and interventions will be done on an individual, group, and electronic basis and data on the outcomes of these interactions will be maintained.
  • Actively participates in the design and implementation of student on boarding and engagement programs for all types of students.
  • Assists the Director of Academic Advising with student tracking, data collection, unit planning and assessment, and the analysis and presentation of data.
  • Assists with division wide planning and projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field of study and two (2) years of experience in a direct service environment in higher education or human resources.

The Academic Advisor will play a crucial role in guiding and supporting students throughout their academic journey. They will provide personalized advisement that connects students' courses of study with their career and/or employment goals. The Academic Advisor will also assist with coordinating academic support services for students within their caseload. This position is supervised by the grant designated Project Manager for Student Services.

This is a grant-funded, hybrid position through the Research Foundation of CUNY. Appointments are subject to availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide academic advising to a caseload of ACCES students and address all academic concerns.
  • Assist students with understanding degree requirements and academic policies and procedures, and ensure their course of study aligns with their employment goals.
  • Collaborate with core advisement units to complete curriculum mapping for students.
  • Conduct regular check-ins to monitor students' academic progress and address any issues or barriers they may encounter.

The Academic Advisor in the D'Amore-McKim School of Business provides student-centered support and guidance to undergraduate Business majors regarding college and university policies, course selection, preregistration, registration, and co-op scheduling. The Advisor will provide support to enhance student engagement, academic progression and retention. The Advisor serves as a liaison between university administrators, students, parents, faculty, staff and others regarding students' academic success. This individual will be in frequent communication with offices across the University to support student success. The Advisor utilizes a variety of university systems to advise the student. Due to the complex and sensitive issues that can arise, a high emphasis is placed on confidentiality and privacy. The Advisor needs to be familiar with and adhere to applicable guidelines laid out by ADA, FERPA, SEVIS and other state, federal, University and College regulations. Academic Advisors are responsible for an assigned caseload of students and work in a team-based model. The Advisor is expected to successfully manage student demand during high traffic times. The Undergraduate Programs Office and the D'Amore-McKim School of Business as well as Northeastern are fast-paced, innovative environments.
The Advisor will assist with new-student orientation sessions and participate in recruitment activities as needed. Supporting and facilitating events and workshops that contribute to the student experience is an expectation of the Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will be involved with special events hosted by the Undergraduate Programs Office. Work hours include some evenings and weekends. Travel may be necessary for certain events or tasks.

Qualifications:

Master's degree required, preferably in counseling, human services or higher education (or equivalent experience advising in a college/university setting.) A minimum of 3 to 4 years of work or educational experience; preferably in higher education. Must enjoy working with students and helping guide them through their academics to graduation. Experience working with the following systems is a plus: Course Catalog, Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS), Banner, Sales Force, EAB Navigate.
