Job Title: Procurement Forester

The Procurement Forester must be willing and able to build relationships with landowners, loggers, and timber dealers necessary to procure a consistent supply of high-quality logs for the mill. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, a quick learner, and eager to take on higher-level responsibilities or a position of leadership.

Job Summary:

The Forester position is responsible to coordinate and manage the procurement of high quality and cost-effective timber to ensure a constant flow of logs into the sawmill. This includes evaluating forest land by interacting and building rapport with a variety of forest landowners.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Procure high-quality timber in a wide variety of wood species.
  • Effectively and professionally interact and build relationships with private landowners, federal, state and local agencies.

  • Oversight of logging and road building contractors.
  • Maintain close communication with sawmill management to determine log volume requirements.

Requirements:

Procurement Forester Responsibilities:

  • All aspects of purchasing standing timber.

    • Appraise timber for quality and value.
    • Locate skid roads and landing locations.
    • Apply costs to all aspects of timber sale preparation and harvesting.

*Compensation*: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of$68,371-$102,556based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Manulife Forest Management, Inc., is seeking a qualified candidate to join the team in Texas, based out of Silsbee. This position supports forest management operations on approximately 130,000 acres in east Texas. Daily assignments are performed in a friendly team environment alongside a diverse group of foresters, managers and administrative personnel.
**Position Responsibilities:**
+ Assisting delivered timber harvesting operations including planning, harvest layout, contract administration, timber security, quality inspections and reporting. Developing site specific silviculture prescriptions, planning, budgeting, implementing and reporting on all applicable operations.
+ Administering local reforestation programs to ensure successful plantations are reestablished that meet or exceed growth expectations.
+ Update inventory and mapping software in conjunction with resource support personnel.
+ Support regional stewardship activities and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI®) Program objectives.
+ Asset protection, working with external consultants, contractors and state agency personnel to ensure casualty losses are minimized.
+ Work with MIMTA Recreational License Administrators, hunters, and other recreational users to ensure license compliance and maximize non-timber revenue.
+ Participate in special projects to add diversity and broaden skills.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ A bachelor's degree in Forestry or a related field.
+ Valid driver's license and be insurable with the company's commercial carrier.
+ Strong computer and analytical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
+ Knowledge or ability to learn and apply key financial concepts to business decisions.
+ Must be a team player and have strong communication skills.

**WHAT YOU WILL DO:**
+ Perform safety oversight of contractors to ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards during all vegetation clearing activities.
+ Assist in the planning and creation of the vegetation clearing scope of work to account for all NERC and utility right of way standards and expectations.
+ Contact property owners to discuss and obtain required written permission to perform vegetation work where necessary.
+ Perform and document quality assurance (QA) inspections on contractor's work for compliance to scope of work, as well as the utility's and industry's specifications.
+ Conduct hazard tree assessments.
+ Communicate daily with the utility client, contractors, landowners, and the general public.
+ Develop a comprehensive understanding of all relevant utility and environmental standards and expectations.
+ Complete work summaries, updated QA reports and progress report updates weekly with a high level of detail.
+ Perform duties in a manner that will promote and maintain good public relations.
+ Willingness to work storm duty following catastrophic weather events that effect the Utility.
+ Drive a company vehicle safely to work locations for the organization.
+ Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
**WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE:**
+ Local tree identification skills.
+ Must have strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, the ability to multi-task and an attention to detail.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to represent AMS and its services in a professional and positive manner.
+ Knowledge of common computer applications and ability to learn new programs.
+ Must be self-motivated, able to work independently, outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
+ Must have basic computer skills (Microsoft Office).
+ Ability to work safely and independently in remote areas with limited supervision.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Ability to accurately read maps and judge spatial distances.
+ Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
**WHAT WOULD BE AMAZING TO HAVE:**
+ Associates or Bachelors' degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, or related discipline preferred.
+ 1-3 years prior experience in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture or tree-related green industry.
+ ISA Arborist Certification is a plus.
+ Prior experience with GIS Mapping Programs a plus.
+ Having a strong team mentality, work ethic, and sense of pride in your work a plus.
+ Familiarity with powerline nomenclature and construction a plus.
+ Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
**Working Environment**
Work alone in an outdoor field environment; vehicle and foot patrol of utility power lines; remote locations as well as urban, city environment; physical demands and travel from site to site, including walking/hiking on various surfaces including flat, dry, wet, slippery, uneven, rough, steep terrain, hills, and slopes; exposure to noise, dust, grease, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions.
