JHMA provides individualized music lessons, performance training and wrap-around artist development services and performance scouting for individuals with autism who are looking to improve their musicianship and begin a career as a musician.

Position: Jazz Hands Musicians Academy

Full Time/ Part Time: Part-time position requiring up to 30 hours per week (depending on number of students in caseload)

Job Overview:

The Part-Time Guidance Counselor at Jazz Hands Musicians Conservatory will meet weekly with students to assess their class and program progress, ensure they remain on track to matriculate through the program, and provide support in completing necessary forms. Job Responsibilities & Duties:

Student Meetings:

Maintain detailed records of each student’s progress, challenges, and achievements in the student progress document.

Provide regular updates to the Program Director and instructional faculty regarding student progress.

Interpret assessments to help students understand their strengths, interests, and areas for improvement (including diagnostic assessment and some Moodle assessment, as applicable).

Use assessment results to inform individualized support plans (student progress document).

Support and Accountability:

Work closely with students, parents and/or support staff, program director and instructors to ensure students with autism receive individualized guidance regarding their course selection and registration. Develop personalized academic plans, considering their unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles.

Assist students in completing necessary forms and paperwork for program requirements (ex. application for Jazz Hands Jobs, helping students schedule their jury, etc).

Provide pre-career guidance and support, including exploring potential career paths in music and related fields and helping students apply to the appropriate study tracks at the Jazz Hands Musicians Academy Conservatory program

Help students set realistic goals and create action plans to achieve them.

Hold students accountable for meeting their goals and completing their coursework.

Help interested students prepare necessary skills needed to be eligible for the Jazz Hands Jobs Program

Communication and Coordination:

Collaborate with instructional faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to student development.

Communicate with parents/guardians and/ or student at home support staff as necessary to discuss student progress and address any concerns.

Organize and facilitate workshops or group sessions on relevant topics (e.g., time management, study skills, personal development), as applicable.

Program Development:

Provide feedback to the Program Director and instructional faculty on potential improvements to the curriculum and student support services using the SIPFAST Form.

Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in guidance counseling and neurodiversity support.

Crisis Intervention:

Provide immediate support and intervention (or refer students to appropriate entities) in situations where students are experiencing emotional or psychological crises.

Coordinate with students’ mental health professionals and other relevant parties if necessary and applicable for students’ learning progress and growth.

Training

Collaborate with executive team to ensure that you receive the appropriate training

Reporting:

Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Program Director on student progress, challenges, and any other relevant issues.

Qualifications & Skills:

Provides orientation to new students regarding the District's educational opportunities and/or career paths.

Discusses alternatives with students and advises in the selection of what seems to be the most desirable course of action.

Serves as a reference source for current information on colleges, technical education, apprenticeships, armed services, and other educational programs and career opportunities.

What are the duties and responsibilities?
  • Disseminate of scholarship information and supply school-to-career guidance
  • Interpret standardized test scores
  • Develop guidance curriculum and provide student resources
  • Counsel individual students
  • Work with students one-on-one, in a private setting with teachers and parents, or with peers in a group assembly or discussion forum.
  • Document all topics covered during counseling session
  • Inform appropriate staff of anything stated during counseling that needs tobe reported
  • Display a friendly, positive nurturing attitude toward students, parents and staff
  • Attend any required meetings for the students
  • Be engaged with the students at all times
  • Maintain positive relationship with school building employees, classroom aides, TSS personal and school administrators
  • Participate in recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and other aspects of professional growth
  • Understand responsibility as a mandated child abuse/neglect reporter according to PA State Law
  • Maintain a professional attitude and loyalty to the organization at all times
  • Other duties as assigned by the Classroom Instructor or the Education Director or other administrators

JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Counseling Supervisor or Coordinator of Virtual Learning (if assigned to the Virtual Learning Program)

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct activities of counselor aides and clerical assistants.

PURPOSE: To help all students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth educational planning, and career and vocational development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. MAJOR FUNCTION: Program Planning

The school counselor establishes the school-counseling program and develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.

The school counselor involves other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program.

2. MAJOR FUNCTION: Counseling

The school counselor provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.

3. MAJOR FUNCTION: Consulting

The school counselor consults with students, parents, teacher, and other school a community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.

4. MAJOR FUNCTION: Coordinating

The school counselor coordinates all counseling services for students and assists with the coordination and implementation of student services in the school.

The counselor also assists teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.

5. MAJOR FUNCTION: Student Appraisal

The school counselor accurately interprets test results and other student data.

The counselor also assists teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies.

6. MAJOR FUNCTION: Professional Practices and Development

The school counselor adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abides by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools.

The counselor also participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills when needed.

7. MAJOR FUNCTION: Learning Management system for Online Program

All online courses are taught using the Guilford County Schools Learning Management System. Counselors assigned to the Virtual Learning Program are expected to attend professional development trainings in order to be proficient in the use of the management system.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree a related field with a Master's degree in counseling or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be licensed by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in counseling or able to obtain licensure in this area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators, etc.
