Job Description
Strong visuals are the basis of this internship. Your portfolio should show your abilities with news, sports, features, portraits, lighting, and in-depth stories and video. It should also reflect the individuality of your vision, capabilities, interests and experiences.
From the first week, you will be expected to perform like a staff member - shooting and editing stills and video, working under tight deadline pressures, and utilizing social media on the job for professional purposes. Editors and other photographers will critique your visual storytelling and technique, including lighting, composition, lens work, cropping, toning, captions and video editing.
Organization, smooth workflow and technical excellence will be required to complete a heavy workload shooting, transmitting on deadline, submitting numerous images for slideshows, sending smartphone stills and/or video from breaking news or live events, occasionally shooting SLR video, and potentially working on short- or long-term projects.
The culture of our newsroom will demand positive energy, intelligence, excellent written and verbal language skills, grace under pressure, attention to detail and big picture vision. A strong sense of humor and being a team player will help greatly. By taking full advantage of learning from our very strong shooters, you will be better prepared to enter the workforce full time.
Photographers should send a link to a tightly edited portfolio showing a diversity of work. Photography interns must be able to work with all departments and across all platforms of The Dallas Morning News.
A cover letter and résumé with references are required with all applications.
