- Ensures that refrigeration equipment is maintained and repaired properly. Analyzes refrigeration mechanical problems, repairs and returns to service with minimum down time. Performs refrigerant recovery, for new refrigerant conversions. Maintains material for normal and emergency repairs. Documents refrigerant usage in log book.
- Ensures boiler and auxiliary equipment are properly operated, maintained and repaired. Operates and maintains Boilers. Diagnoses and corrects minor operational problems. Repairs or replaces valves, sight glasses and limit controls. Regulates, repairs or replaces feed water and condensate pumps and steam traps.
- Knowledge and skill necessary to make repairs and maintenance on HVAC equipment demonstrated through the use of manuals, blueprints and schematics. Reads electrical wiring schematics to troubleshoot problems. Reads mechanical piping blueprints and eliminates cooling and heating problems. Understands and interprets specifications and service manuals.
- Correctly utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment in required situations. Ensure integrity of hospital issued and staff provided personal protective equipment. Serves in the Utilities Division of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or the Airport Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
Installs, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains commercial-grade and industrial-scale air conditioning (AC) and ventilation systems, refrigeration equipment, and auxiliary heating and AC units. Performs related functions.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Responds to emergency calls; troubleshoots and identifies problems, and performs necessary repairs, adjustments, or corrections.
Dismantles and repairs, replaces, or reassembles electrical, electronic, and pneumatic control AC units and associated HVAC units.
Installs and fits bearings, bushings, connecting rods, and shafts; aligns motors and flywheel drives (At DCA); adjusts controls; sets heat anticipators and rewires units; and installs purge units for recovery.
Repairs non-functioning water coolers and window air conditioners.
Recommends modifications to equipment, preventive maintenance procedures, and cycles for efficient operation of equipment.
Manually adjusts heat-pumps from cooling to heating, coordinating actions with AEM Shop (At IAD) and the Airport Fire Department on initial start-ups in case smoke detectors sound alarms.
Welds, brazes, solders, bends, and cuts pipe and tubing.
Substitutes as Air Conditioning Equipment Operator by operating centralized, multiple-zone air conditioning and heating systems in airport buildings.
Work with Siemens Building Automation System (BAS).
(At DCA) Troubleshoots and Replaces Direct Digital Controls (DDC).
(At DCA) May perform chemical tests of cooling-tower water.
May guide AC Repairers, HVAC Apprentice's or other workers and provides on-the-job training as necessary.
Occasionally cleans cooling towers and machine rooms and paints equipment.
Writes discrepancy reports for problems encountered on tenant-maintained equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of progressively responsible experience in the installation, test, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning equipment and systems.
Full performance (journey) level knowledge of and skill in the HVAC trade.
(At DCA) Knowledge of and skill in making repairs to Chillers and Chilled Water Systems and Boilers (low-pressure hot water).
Skill in using tools, technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, manufacturer's materials, and other equipment and guides in journey-level HVAC work.
Ability to analyze data and information (including blueprints and schematics).
Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.
Ability to speak and write effectively.

The ideal candidate will perform skilled manual work involving the repair and installation of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating equipment. In addition to supporting the department's Air Conditioning Mechanic II, will also:
- Overhauls and services refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating units by repairing or replacing worn parts.
- Inspects equipment for needed repairs and performs routine maintenance.
- Tests refrigeration units for leaks; adds gas to refrigeration units.
- Monitors valves and gages to ensure proper operation; adjust valves, pipes, etc., as needed.
- Changes and cleans oil and air filters.
- Operates Centrifugal and Reciprocating chillers.
- Assists in installing air conditioning and heating units, and related equipment.
- May assist in training lower-level employees.
- Cleans work areas and equipment.

Minimum Requirements:
- Technical or vocational degree and two years of HVAC experience, a high school diploma or GED and four years of HVAC experience, or a combination of education and related experience.

Summary This Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic position is part of the Facility Management Service Line (FMS) at the VA Central Western Mass Healthcare System, located in Leeds, MA. This position performs a wide range of work; installing and recognizing the cause of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. Responsibilities Major Duties & Responsibilities Calculates airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems; locates and repairs faulty equipment swiftly in order to reduce inoperative time to a minimum; locates trouble before dismantling, and makes repairs which insure proper functioning after assembly. Performs complex repairs such as installing and fitting connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushings; overhauling valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings; and aligning motors and flywheel drives. Checks out the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems to locate and check elements such as those that control low side and high side pressure; the temperature of the cooling units; the temperatures of the liquid and suction lines; and the running time of the various mechanisms. Examines equipment components visually and audibly for the probability of leaks; and performs prescribed test procedures, and explores probable reasons for equipment failure. Identifies faulty equipment causes and makes repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. These systems use a variety of methods of air conditioning such as mechanical compression, vapor compression, absorption and steam jet or air cycle. Subpart F, which authorized him/her to install and recover refrigerants to include but not limited to R11, R12, R22, R502, R134A, R123, R404A, R409A and R408A. Repair multiple pumps and compressor systems such as primary chill water pumps, secondary chill water pumps, centrifugal chillers and reciprocating chillers. Maintain and perform preventive maintenance on the environmental control rooms. Perform operational checks on all equipment after repair and preventive maintenance. Troubleshoot and repair of multi-zone air conditioning equipment with all necessary fans, pumps, cooling towers and controls required to condition medical center space.
