Position Summary
Academic Advisor

Full-Time

Academic Advising is seeking an academic advisor who will be responsible for providing quality academic advising services to current undergraduate students. The Academic Advisor is responsible for staying current on policies and procedures as they relate to academic advising and building relationships with colleges and academic departments. The Academic Advisor will work collaboratively within Academic Advising, making appropriate student referrals within the Center and to other resources across campus.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide developmental academic advising for undergraduate students who are advised through the Academic Advising Center
  • Serve as a resource to students and faculty to interpret academic policies and procedures, academic objectives, major options, and registration procedures
  • Teach students the skills to self-navigate to degree completion utilizing campus information, student portal, Degree Works, university bulletin, college/department policies and procedures, and online resources
  • Utilize technology such as SupportNET, Degree Works, and Banner to monitor student academic progress, making appropriate referrals to campus resources, follow up with tracking items, and maintain accurate records on advisees and confidential student services records
  • Monitor student academic progress, including follow-up with students based on midterm grades and academic probation status, making appropriate referrals to student support units
  • Onboard new students by coordinating their enrollment at freshman orientation, transfer orientation, and international student orientation
  • Assist with training of graduate assistants and student workers
  • Membership on Academic Advising Council, Professional Advisor Team, College Councils, and other committees that relate to academic advising and student success
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of academic advising, counseling, or a closely related area through work experience or an educational setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience working as part of a team in a collaborative work environment
  • Evidence of the ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening and weekend hours, consistent with student needs
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

The position will be filled at either an Academic Advisor or Academic Advisor Senior level based upon qualifications and assigned duties:

  • For Academic Advisor - Bachelor's degree is required.
  • For Academic Advisor Senior - Bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant experience is required. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational background in the life sciences or experience or educational background in education or counseling. Understanding of developmental academic advising processes. 
  • Experience with the software programs DegreeWorks, Banner, and/or Aggie Handshake. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of student development and the ability to serve and assist the students in developing effective academic plans and career and life goals in order to promote student retention and academic success. 
  • Knowledge of student advising and graduation requirements for academic degrees, and the ability to anticipate department and/or student needs. 
  • Ability to creatively and independently problem-solve by prioritizing and multitasking while under pressure. 
  • Ability to serve individuals with diverse personalities through the use of effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

We are seeking an Academic Advising Manager who will support the academic advising function for the assigned area. This position will liaise with assigned academic departments and oversee focused operational tasks. This position will also manage and direct a team of Academic Advising professionals. The role is responsible for advising a small caseload of students to assist them with academic planning, course registration, academic strategies, selecting majors and minors, and developing post-graduation plans with the goal of enhancing the undergraduate student experience.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership & Collaboration (50%)

  • Supervises, recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates a team of academic advisors.
  • Manages several significant advising functions such as transfer evaluation, assessment, and/or academic standing.
  • Coordinates liaison system with assigned academic departments to share information, troubleshoot student issues, and develop collaborative co-curricular programming.
  • Works closely with assigned campus partners such registrar's office, athletics, international services, student life, residential life to collaborate on shared tasks and develop collaborative co-curricular programming.
  • Serves as a part of the academic advising leadership team.
  • Responsible for implementing the advising mission and student learning goals to enhance the student's undergraduate experience.
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining an inclusive working environment, free from discrimination and harassment, and in line with the community agreements established by the office.
  • Participates on campus-wide committees as assigned.

Academic Advising (50%)

  • Advise a dedicated caseload of advisees.
  • Help students navigate their academic experience by assisting with proactive academic planning, creative problem solving, and connection to academic resources.
  • Work with students holistically to help them meet their personal and academic goals and to help find solutions for personal, social, financial, and academic probations.
  • Assist undergraduate students with course registration, selecting majors and minors and developing post-graduation plans.
  • Assist graduate students with course registration and navigating their academic experience (e.g. sequencing of classes, following their plan of study).
  • With the purpose of facilitating student success and retention, track student progress by running reports, analyzing student data, and communicating with students regarding registration, grades, and graduation.
  • View and manage early warning flags by providing outreach to students and communicating with faculty.
  • Troubleshoot problems with registration and refer students to support services to facilitate success.
  • Advise undergraduates on academic opportunities and requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Provide early interventions identifying and communicating with at-risk students identified by faculty.
  • Meet with students who are on academic probation, to facilitate self-assessment and ongoing academic success planning.
  • Monitor students' academic progress to advise them of their academic standing.
  • Communicate to students the process and deadlines for graduation processing.
  • Create and maintain accurate academic records through degree audit software and SIS, document student meetings and notes in the student information database.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Seven years academic advising or other related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  1. Advance ISyE's curriculum through project-based learning (PBL), experiential education, and evidence-based pedagogy that fosters collaboration, creativity, and real-world problem-solving.
  2. Develop and disseminate innovative curricular models, PBL frameworks, and educational research that enhance ISyE's national reputation for excellence in engineering education.
  3. Expand ISyE's impact across Georgia Tech and beyond by building bridges with other disciplines, industry partners, and community stakeholders, highlighting ISyE's role in addressing systemic societal challenges through data-driven and human-centered solutions.

Responsibilities:

Teaching (30'40%)
  • Design and direct new courses and experiences that allow students to apply ISyE methods to real-world systemic problems (e.g., healthcare, supply chains, sustainability).
  • Develop training modules to align teaching across multiple ISyE courses.
  • Incorporate emerging educational technologies (AI-assisted learning, simulation tools, data visualization platforms) into instruction to enhance student engagement.
Administration and Research (40'50%)
  • Lead curricular innovation initiatives such as embedding teamwork and leadership into the ISyE curriculum.
  • Mentor faculty in evidence-based pedagogy, effective teaching, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).
  • Conduct and disseminate educational research on High Impact Practices in ISyE contexts, with opportunities to publish, present, and secure external funding
  • Collaborate with Georgia Tech's Center for Teaching and Learning and other schools to promote cross-disciplinary curriculum models.
  • Develop industry partnerships for authentic PBL projects that prepare students for leadership in complex organizational environments.
Service (20%)
  • Contribute to ISyE curriculum and faculty development committees, with an emphasis on fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Build and sustain communities of practice around teaching, mentoring, and student success.
  • Provide leadership in professional societies (INFORMS, ASEE, IISE) through workshops, panels, and publications that raise ISyE's national profile.
