Job Description
Formative is seeking a Strategist with a passion for digital marketing, executive communications, and using data to make informed decisions about channels and content. This full-time role will support major client projects and initiatives.
Who We Are
Formative is a Seattle-based agency of professionals who are passionate about helping solve society's most pressing challenges by connecting with audiences in deep, meaningful ways. We operate in the arenas of social good and purpose-driven brands, working to design and launch campaigns, programs and platforms that maximize impact on behalf of clients including Gates Ventures, Child Mind Institute, Allen Family Philanthropies, Microsoft, and Amazon Sustainability to name a few.
Our people are relentless seekers, problem solvers, thoughtful collaborators, and sector experts. We're inspired by doing work that matters in the world and delivering powerful solutions that help solve our clients' biggest priorities.
Who We're Looking For
We are looking for a strategist with a focus on communications-particularly organic social media-to join our team and help drive thought leadership and executive communications programs. This role is ideal for someone who wants end-to-end ownership over digital channels: monitoring conversations, pitching and writing organic content, and reporting on impact. The right candidate is a strong, concise writer who's curious about social impact, energized by the rhythm of daily delivery, and excited to build and evolve a growing organic function. They should thrive in structured, delivery-focused environments, be eager to see how their work connects to a broader communications system, show potential to take on long-form or non-social projects as their role expands, and enjoy digging into a range of social impact topics.
Requirements (candidate should be proficient in all of these)
- Minimum 2+ years agency, or client marketing experience, with an emphasis on communications, content development (including writing content for social channels), and reporting and insights.
- Strong writing skills and content production experience across short- and long-form formats-able to craft clear, engaging, and strategic copy for social media (including LinkedIn) and other communications channels.
- Experience monitoring and analyzing digital conversations (social listening) to inform messaging, strategy, and content planning.
- Ability to synthesize insights from multiple data sources (e.g., social analytics, audience research, topic documents, platform trends) into clear takeaways and recommendations.
- Knowledge of multichannel marketing (particularly social), and understanding what makes each channel unique and how to engage audiences in each platform. Comfort receiving input from multiple collaborators and iterating on content drafts and strategy memos.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including competency with PowerPoint or slide tools for presenting ideas.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to stay organized while juggling multiple tasks.
- Experience creating or managing content calendars for organic social media.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, their audiences, and their evolving best practices
- Ability to develop or track content performance using KPIs, native analytics tools, and dashboards
- Foundational understanding of brand voice and messaging frameworks
- Exposure to program or campaign strategy and implementation
- Ability to organize qualitative and quantitative findings into clear summaries and visual formats
- Knowledge of media, advocacy, or cause-based communications landscapes

Job Description
Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
