The Mechanical Engineer will have the following responsibilities:

  • Under limited supervision, create engineering designs including: HVAC systems master planning & studies; HVAC & Plumbing systems; mechanical systems (co-generation); sustainability/energy efficiency/renewable energy/green buildings; etc., of basic to high complexity to meet client project requirements.

  • Review draft designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Ensure that firm policies and practices are followed on all designs.

  • Perform site reviews and studies, as needed, to ensure designs are aligned with location specifications. Update design requirements as necessary.

  • Contribute to the firm's Technical Knowledge Management by developing white papers and technical design documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc. Submit technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals.

  • Attend conferences, symposia, etc., to improve the visibility of the firm's products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.

  • Provide technical guidance and training to more junior staff. Mentor more junior staff and develop them for future growth within the discipline and firm. May supervise the work of junior engineers on project work.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural or Chemical Engineering, or Engineering Technology or related discipline. Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in states where an EIT is not obtainable (within 18 months of hire or promotion or transfer).

  • 5 years of related experience.

  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) desired.

**Job Responsibilities:**
Perform the following engineering tasks:
+ Support all phases of a project lifecycle, including investigation, evaluation, analysis, design, and engineering services during construction.

As a Building Mechanical Engineer at Jacobs, you'll be at the cutting edge of our efforts to bring innovation and excellence to some of the most exciting infrastructure projects in the region. - Design complete HVAC systems, including package type and central plants.
- Design odor control systems, including vapor and liquid phase treatment technologies.
- Design fire protection systems using a performance system approach.
- Prepare calculations for plumbing systems, including water and drainage flows, water heater sizing, and pump sizing and selection.
- Perform calculations for design, such as air loads, pipe/duct/equipment sizing, ventilation requirements, static pressure, odor removal, life-cycle costs, and energy analyses.
- Select equipment, coordinate with equipment vendors, and edit specifications.

- Provide design guidance and mentorship to designers/drafters and less experienced engineers.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (BSME) or chemical engineering (BSChE) from an ABET accredited institution is preferred, but consideration will be given to candidates with degrees in other fields of engineering.
- 5+ years producing plumbing, HVAC, odor control, and fire protection design drawings and specifications for construction. Less experience in any one of these disciplines is not considered cause for disqualification. However, you will be required to work in all stated disciplines.
- PE License, or ability to obtain immediately upon hire.
- Working knowledge of applicable building codes and standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, SMACNA, IBC, etc.
- Good writing skills and experience preparing technical specifications and reports.
- Willingness to learn new skills and practices as needed.
- Carrier HAP or Trane Trace experience is desirable, but not required.

Required Education/Experience

WSP in the US's Facilities Division seeks a **Lead Mechanical Engineer** to join our **Boise, Idaho, Madison, Wisconsin or Overland Park, Kansas location** . The Facilities Division specializes in Food & Beverage, Federal, and Industrial facility design. We are responsible leaders with a focus on the future while providing functional and high-performing projects. We do this through the integration of responsible design that includes new buildings, remodels, and additions as well as studies and evaluations of existing systems. A major component of our work is providing engineering services to help our clients change and adapt their facilities and systems to meet their changing goals.
Your Impact
+ Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
+ Apply high-level mechanical engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various building and infrastructure project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
+ Perform professional mechanical engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, usage, and mechanical systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
+ Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans, and updating infrastructure layout plans that require coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
+ Involved from project inception to completion in the management of mechanical design and construction of building and infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, new builds, operating specifications, building materials, phasing, and construction safety plans.
+ Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems; implementing future-ready solutions with mechanical engineering design standards.
+ Knowledge of mechanical systems and theory, such as; heating and chilled water (hydronics), steam, compressed air, refrigeration, natural gas, and high-pressure water
+ Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues relating to automatic temperature control systems and specifications, air distribution (supply, return, exhaust), hydronic systems (chilled water, heating water, etc.) and plumbing systems (domestic water, waste, vent, storm, etc.).
+ Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, tracking hours and expenses, task completion, cost and quantities of materials/equipment/labor, technical calculations, permit applications, schematics, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
+ Coordinate, review and approve installation design plans, ensuring data integrity and work is compliant with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
+ Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and other illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of more complex data, findings, or analyses.
+ Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address engineering, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
+ Analyze, evaluate, and interpret data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing action plans for moderate- to high-level risk installation, equipment operations, and/or mitigation activities.
+ Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
+ Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
+ Collaborate with professionals, other engineers, planners, and building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
+ Remain current in latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline.
+ 7 to 10 years of relevant post education experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, and utility piping design and be able to perform work requiring independent judgement, knowledge of engineering principles, procedures, and code requirements
+ Engineer license required.
+ Proficient with mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
+ Extensive knowledge of building and infrastructure design.
+ Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including active involvement in a variety of rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
+ Well-defined knowledge with process and concepts for reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances/greenhouse gas.
+ Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant mechanical engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
+ Well-developed ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
+ Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities, structures and systems, applying applicable regulations and policies.
+ Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
+ Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
+ Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, load calculations, discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM), technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
+ Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, load calculations, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
+ Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Master's Degree in Engineering.
+ Autodesk Revit, MEP and/or Plant 3D experience
+ Member of ASHRAE and IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration)

**Compensation**
Expected Salary (all locations): $98,300- $165,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
