Uncommon Schools seeks an accomplished, passionate Music Teacher to join our faculty. The position represents an exciting opportunity to join a growing program that is dedicated to developing excellence in musical talent throughout the K-12 education of our scholars. Our general music pedagogy is grounded in the Orff and Kodaly approaches. Our music program includes singing, movement, playing instruments, and music literacy in every class, with students engaged in as much active music-making as possible. Instrumental instruction includes recorder (in third grade), unpitched percussion, and Orff instruments. 

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Implement network-provided curricula and activities to meet music-specific academic standards;
  • Teach all music-based content including but not limited to singing, dance and movement, elementary instrumental (recorder, Orff instruments, drumming) music;
  • Develop music literacy lesson components related to teaching rhythm and pitch notation, solfege reading and singing, improvisation and composition
  • High-level collaboration with Enrichment teachers and Director of Operations to create and plan for multiple performances throughout the school year
  • Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards;
  • Support school instructional and cultural needs including but not limited to academic teaching coverage, test proctoring, daily systems duties, additional supportive duties
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, department activities, and school-wide functions;
  • Develops strong classroom management skills congruent with Uncommon Schools system of management;
  • Be accountable for students’ mastery of musical standards;
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues; and
  • Participate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts of Bachelor of Music in Music, Music Education or Performance
  • Experience teaching general and vocal music to elementary aged children;
  • Experience with the Kodaly and Orff approaches. Levels training in one or both pedagogies is highly preferred;
  • Ability to manage and direct large groups of students;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Valid State Certification is helpful but not required;
  • Piano and vocal proficiency, knowledge of recorder, basic guitar. Additional instrument proficiency is helpful.
  • Belief in and alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable;
  • Experience performing and/or teaching music is highly preferred;
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred;

Compensation

Compensation for this role is between $50,000 to $4,700.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:


As part of a secondary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes in the field of music to pupils in grades 7-12, and assists in other school programs as assigned.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) to secondary pupils. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative code and procedures of the school district.
  3. Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  4. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Encourages pupils to develop individual musical skills to the greatest extent possible.
  5. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  6. Maintains surveillance over school-owned music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments and equipment in order to prevent loss or abuse.
  7. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  8. Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group. Prepares progress reports.
  9. Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community. Applies knowledge of district procedures and limitations set on performances.
  10. Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education workshop and clinics provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Selects appropriate music, books, and instructional aides to enhance learning. Requisitions books, music, robes, uniforms, musical instruments, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintains required inventory records.
  2. Communications with parents and school counselors on the individual pupil’s progress.
  3. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  4. Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.

CHORAL
  • At least three (3) concert-type performances to include a Holiday Program, Spring Concert or comparable activity, other additional concert activity.
  • Actively encourage student participation, by audition, in District, Regional, and/or State honor choirs.
  • Seek participation by performing groups in appropriate District, Regional, and/or State Choral festivals.
  • At least one (1) program each year, either concert or assembly, emphasizing popular music, with the purpose of stimulating further student participation in choral music.
  • At least one (1) program each year, either concert or assembly, emphasizing patriotic music.
  • Where and when feasible, an annual joint program of the choral music department of both high schools to give students the experience of performing in larger vocal groups and under different conductors, as well as to promote district unity in artistic and aesthetic endeavors.
  • See some type of activity during the year which will relate choral music to instrumental music,
    dram, speech, and/or the other theatrical arts.

HIGH SCHOOL BAND
  • Attendance at half-time activities at all home football games.
  • Performance at all home basketball games.
  • Participation in all community parades within the district.
  • Participation in at least one (1) additional parade each year, when approved by the district.
  • At least three (3) concert performances during the year, to include where and when possible, the following: Holiday Program, Spring Concert or comparable activity, one (1) additional concert activity.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.
  • Performs basic accounting and business services as required.
  • Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees.
  • May plan and coordinate the work of aides.

SUPERVISOR:


Under the immediate supervision of the site level administrator.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Credential: Appropriate California teaching credential
2. Education: Bachelor’s degree with music major or minor, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Choral teachers: ability to sing. Instrumental teachers: ability to play at least one standard orchestral instrument.

Two days per week at Village Elementary School
